By LScisco on September 22, 2023
Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect provide commentary for a new taping cycle in Lexington, Kentucky. According to thehistoryofwwe.com, the taping took place on May 19 and drew 7,000 fans. That is less than half of Rupp Arena’s full capacity.
Opening Non-Title Contest: Bret Hart (Intercontinental Champion) (16-1-1) beats Tom Stone via submission to the Sharpshooter at 1:55:
As Bret gives Stone an atomic drop, Shawn Michaels admires himself in a mirror that Sensational Sherri is holding, saying that Bret will not be lucky when he defends the Intercontinental Championship against him.
Gene Okerlund shills ICOPRO, the official sponsor of The WBF Championship. His Update segment recaps the Big Bossman’s beatdown by the prisoner and announces that the name of the unknown convict is Nailz. Nailz does a taped promo with a nightstick telling the Bossman that he is in his prison now and no one can stop him now that he is out of jail. The WWF altered Nailz’s voice for these promos to make him sound menacing.
The Nasty Boys (w/Jimmy Hart) (10-0) beat Reno Riggins & Major Yates when Jerry Sags pins Yates after the Trip to Nastyville at 1:58:
Riggins was the last trainee of Memphis legend Tojo Yamamoto and began his career on the Tennessee independent scene in 1986. He started doing televised work for the WWF, as well as WCW, in 1988 and did some enhancement work for Global in 1991. At the time of this taping he was serving as an enhancement worker for Jim Cornette’s upstart Smoky Mountain Wrestling (SMW) promotion.
Yates was a smaller worker who had been doing enhancement work for the WWF going back to 1990. In 1991 he was often used as cannon fodder for heel acts like the Undertaker, the Mountie, Power & Glory, and the Beverly Brothers.
In the split screen, High Energy promises to blast off at the Nasties expense. The Nasties pummel their opponents in turn with their usual moves. Before the finish Brian Knobbs yells about how the Nasties are coming for High Energy.
The Texas Tornado (6-1) pins Mike Collins after the discus punch at 1:22:
The Tornado has not appeared since the April 26 edition of Wrestling Challenge. His squash serves as vehicle for McMahon to put over The WBF Championship and its fitness exposition, with the Tornado doing an insert promo about how he will be there.
The Beverly Brothers (w/the Genius) (11-1) defeat Mike Samples & Scott Bailey when Beau pins Bailey after the Shaker Heights Spike at 2:41:
Samples was a three-year veteran, trained by George Weingeroff, Jerry Jarrett, and Tojo Yamamoto. He was a staple in the USWA, working as Leatherface and under his own name. He also did enhancement work for WCW and the WWF, doing jobs the previous year on television for the British Bulldog, the Natural Disasters, the Bushwhackers, and Power & Glory.
After the bell rings, the Beverlys approach a kid in the audience who is wearing some Legion of Doom shoulder pads and paint “LOS” on them. That gets a bit of heat from the kids. The Beverlys also do an insert promo where they call Paul Ellering a pansy and repeat their call of how the Legion are sissies. The action is short as Samples takes the entire beating and the Beverlys paint his face and write “LOS” on his chest after the bout. They also pick up the shoulder pads from the young fan and put them on Bailey before exiting.
Crush (2-0) defeats George Anderson via submission to a head vice at 1:28:
Crush predicts that Gary Strydom will win The WBF Championship in the split screen and hypes his appearance at the personal fitness expo. The squash puts over Crush’s power and agility as he military presses Anderson several times and does a leg drop. He wins with a head vice to put over his love of crushing things. Afterward, Crush helps Anderson up in a show of good sportsmanship but the jobber falls back down without Crush’s assistance in raising his hand.
Okerlund interviews Papa Shango after doing a long recap of Shango’s feud with the Ultimate Warrior. Shango warns the Warrior that he has entered his dark world and it is closing in on him. When Shango goes to leave, Okerlund expresses relief that it is over so Shango makes Okerlund’s right hand, which holds the microphone, bleed black goo and Okerlund drops his microphone. Okerlund tried to get this over but the goo coming from his wrist was a trickle and fans were confused about what was going on.
High Energy (5-0) beat Kato & Kevin Kruger when Owen Hart pins Kruger after a Koko B. Ware missile dropkick at 2:28:
The Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart promise to nasticize and short circuit High Energy in the split screen. When Perfect criticizes High Energy’s attire, McMahon says that they are wearing high energy, whatever that means. Owen is trying to match Koko’s energy but some of it comes across as forced. High Energy alter their finisher to Owen lifting Kruger for a Ware missile dropkick and then using a rolling cradle after the move to score the winning pin.
Repo Man (14-2) beats Dan Robbins via submission to a single leg Boston Crab at 1:32:
Repo Man does an insert promo telling the British Bulldog that he is the best repo man and dogcatcher in the country. Repo beats Robbins down so he can submit him. After the match he ties his tow rope around Robbins’ ankle and drags him around the ring. He also leg drops him across the back of the neck.
Tune in next week to see Shawn Michaels, Kamala, and Tatanka in action! Also, Nailz will make his in-ring debut! And WWF Champion Randy Savage will appear for a special interview!
The Last Word: Vince McMahon is treating The WBF Championship as the WWF’s third pay-per-view event of the year even though poor ticket sales and poor television ratings for WBF Body Stars are showing that the public has no appetite for it. The WBF hype overwhelmed the direction of today’s show, which provided nothing new for fans aside from the unknown convict being given a name. The first episode of a television taping usually featured something significant but that was not the case today.
