Long (and underwhelming) title reigns
By Scott Keith on August 9, 2023
Hey Scott,
Remembering the late 90s/early 2000s when titles were devalued and being passed around weekly/monthly – the idea of anyone holding a title for more than a few months was unusual, but now (as of writing) we have these reigns in WWE:
– Reigns (1,074 days)
– Gunther (423 days)
– Austin Theory (254 days)
1) especially with these guys all being heels, is it too much the other way now – do we have too many long title reigns? It also seems to make title matches too predictable because the challengers/story arcs for these belts aren’t significant enough to end reigns of this duration.
2) Second part to the email, has anyone in any major promotion ever had a more underwhelming lengthy reign with a relatively important singles title than Theory’s current run with the US Title? Literally not one single memorable story or moment for the past eight months.
I couldn't even have told you who the US champion was so that shows you how effective his reign has been. The long title reigns for the sake of rewriting history is kind of the worst, because they're basically devaluing their own past.
