The SmarK Rant for Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling – 11.13.82

Taped from Charlotte, NC

Your host is Bob Caudle

Rowdy Roddy Piper v. Frank Monte

Monte tended to be a Mid-South jobber but I guess he was moonlighting here. Piper beats the hell out of him and finishes with a back suplex into a cradle at 0:31.

Sgt. Slaughter & Don Kernodle join us, and they still can’t find any opponents to face them, but Roddy Piper wanders in and Sarge tells him to go find a partner and face them IF HE HAS ANY GUTS. But Piper wears a skirt and plays bagpipes, so Sarge suspects his partner might be Fabulous Moolah or Tommy Rich or someone like that. Piper: “It’s Abdullah the Butcher”. Sarge has nothing to say about that one. Well that’s definitely a choice.

Back from the break, and Piper has the footage of a brawl with Ric Flair and Greg Valentine, where he chases them away with a chair “like little dogs who go ARR ARR ARR!” and saves Wahoo. Piper jokes that he turned babyface so that he doesn’t have to fight Wahoo anymore. Speaking of Wahoo, he also has film, in this case himself losing the US title to Greg Valentine recently. The finish is Valentine bailing to the apron and getting a foreign object from Humperdink, setting up the Randy Savage finish where Wahoo does a suplex and gets popped with the object and pinned. Wahoo notes that he could protest, but instead he’s just going to get his revenge and regain the title before Thanksgiving.

Wahoo McDaniel v. Masa Fuchi

Bob pronounces it “Mr. Fuji” so we’ll think he’s a bigger star I guess. They trade some HELLACIOUS chops and Fuchi goes down first, so Wahoo chinlocks him. Fuchi escapes with a back suplex for two and he goes to the dreaded nerve pinch, but Wahoo fights out of that and hits him with a chop as Fuchi does a wacky sell, and that’s enough for the pin at 3:50. Fun squash here early in the career for Fuchi.

Jos Leduc v. Ricky Rood

HOLY SHIT. Young jobber Ricky Rood is indeed who you think it is, and if this isn’t his debut in the sport then it’s pretty damn close to it. For sure it’s his first ever TV appearance. And he’s cut up even in 1982. Leduc pounds him down and goes to a full nelson, then clobbers him with a forearm to put him down. Bob Caudle keeps saying it “Rudd” like he’s the brother of Paul Rudd or something. Jos finishes with the backbreaker at 3:11. Quite the ignominious debut for Rood, but given his look the promoters had to be getting ready to find him something bigger as soon as possible.

Greg Valentine v. Ron Ritchie

Hammer has his newly won title here, making him the top guy in the promotion for the moment. Hammer gets a pair of rollups on Ritchie for two and hits him with a kneelift, then follows with a backbreaker and drops knees on the ribs. Ritchie fights back with chops, but Valentine takes him down with an atomic drop and puts the boots to him. Ron fights back again, but Valentine piledrives him and then gives him a back suplex, really making him think about that one, and drops the Hammer to finish at 4:31.

Sir Oliver Humperdink joins Bob at the desk, warning us of the impending debut of BRUISER BRODY. Then it’s over to King Parsons and Gary Black, who are facing the World tag team champions tonight, and Parsons is already getting closer to Iceman Parsons, with the jive talkin’ promos and chest tattoo.

Sgt. Slaughter & Don Kernodle v. King Parsons & Gary Black

The champs double-team Parsons in their corner and work on his arm, as Slaughter hits him with a hammerlock slam and drops a knee on the arm. Kernodle with another knee to the arm for two and Slaughter cuts off the tag attempt, keeping Parsons int heir corner and working the arm with hammerlocks. Parsons fights out on Kernodle but Sarge cuts him off again and hammerlocks the arm again. Kernodle finally lets him tag out to Black, but the heels swarm him and beat him down before hitting a double team powerslam for two. Slaughter Cannon and the Cobra Clutch finish at 5:10. It’s so nice to see Slaughter treating his former prison bitch like an equal now.

Paul Jones and the House of Humperdink join us at the desk, as Oliver announces that they’re doing a one night tournament to crown a new TV champion after Leduc was stripped of it, and since Leduc is barred from competing, it’s Bad Bad Leroy Brown representing the House.

Bad Bad Leroy Brown v. Mike Rotundo

Mike has his wacky neck brace again after getting his neck mangled by a piledriver last week. Rotundo works the arm to keep him on the mat, but Brown powers out and beats on Mike’s neck for a bit. But Rotundo dropkicks him and goes back to the arm again before switching to a spinning toehold. Brown gives him the ol’ Jesse Ventura special to escape and takes over with an elbow drop for two, but Mike is in the ropes. Leroy takes him to the floor and slams him out there and then back in for another piledriver attempt, but Jack Brisco runs in and he’s had enough of Brown’s nonsense and stops the match with a DQ at 6:10. And Rotundo stops by the desk and he’s pretty upset about having to be saved by Brisco, cutting a psychotic promo about how he needs to learn to take care of himself and he needs to beat Leroy Brown on his own. So he’s challenging Brown to ANOTHER match next week and he’s not gonna stop until he takes him down and beats him on his own. No spoilers but this actually did pay off with something.

The Briscos & Jimmy Valiant v. Ken Timbs, Gene Anderson & Private Jim Nelson

We’re short on time so Gerry finishes Timbs with the figure-four at 0:30. And the Briscos do a quick promo at the desk to wrap up the show.

Man now I want to see that Piper & Abdullah team. Another great episode this week.
