The Genius of The Simpsons
By Scott Keith on April 14, 2023
Hi Scott, was just looking back at the classic season 6 episode of The Simpsons, “Sideshow Bob Roberts,” and nearly 30 years later, it's still a masterpiece (one of the best political satires of all time) and with all apologies (and deepest respect) to “Cape Feare,” the episode is Kelsey Grammer's finest voice work for Bob imo.
“Hmph! Attempted Murder! Now honestly what is that? Do they give a Nobel Prize for attempted chemistry? Do they?”
And of course my all time favorite:
“Your guilty conscience may force you to vote democratic, but deep down inside you secretly long for a cold hearted republican to lower taxes, brutalise criminals and rule you like a king!” The delivery is utter perfection.
Season 6 is my all time favorite and I wanted to get you and the blog's thoughts on what season or seasons was the pinnacle for The Simpsons as far as writing and show quality?
I use the attempted chemistry line Waaaaaaaay too much. Also the mean spirited Rush Limbaugh parody was both prescient of what a truly awful human being Rush turned out to be, and also foretold equally shitty “truth tellers” like Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity rising to take his place.
Also the show did a “best episode ever” tournament with Monorail beating out Homer at the Bat in the finals last week. I can’t get behind anything other than Last Exit to Springfield winning but still it’s a solid choice.
