How would these Dream Matches ideally go down?

By Scott Keith on March 21, 2023

We talk a lot about which dream matches we wish we could've seen, but not a lot about how we'd like to have seen them.

So looking at the following go-to dream matches, what is your ideal scenario for how they would go down: Who's the face/heel? Is it an AE brawl, a gimmick match, or does it stay in the ring? How long? What era? You can even throw in your predicted match rating.

Goldberg vs. Austin

Hogan vs. Austin

Sting vs. Undertaker

Rock vs. HBK

Angle vs. Bret

Any others?

Gah, I'm being overloaded with questions here! I'm overstimulated!
Goldberg v. Austin would have worked in 2001 with Austin as heel. They could have done an Attitude Era Austin brawl and it would have been fine and drawn a bazillion dollars.
Hogan v. Austin would have been a trainwreck of epic proportions and I'm glad Steve didn't want to go ahead with it because Rock was a much better match for Hulk at that point. I just can't see a time period or dynamic where it would have worked and been any good.
Sting v. Undertaker feels like one where Undertaker could play subtle heel if it's later on, or just full on heel if it's pre-streak Undertaker. If they could pull it off, say, right after WCW died and Sting was still somewhat mobile and motivated, they would have a fun brawl I feel like. Especially if it's grumpy BikerTaker with Sting bumping for him. Or go back to 1998 and do full on Ministry of Darkness Undertaker playing nWo foil to Sting in the rafters and such. That would be a good dynamic.
Rock v. HBK is another one that just feels like such a trainwreck that I don't think it would have worked in real life. Unless it's something like the Hogan match where Shawn does a goofy clown show selling for Rock or something, I dunno. The vibe just feels off for them and I don't think they would mesh.
Angle v. Bret would be hella interesting, if you're playing with time machines and taking full on 1997 Hart Foundation Bret and matching him up with wrestling god Angle in 2001. I can see something like Bret arrogantly trying to hang with Kurt in mat wrestling and getting frustrated to the point where he snaps and has to devise an increasingly devious series of cheating shenanigans or something. It would be a lot of fun and probably an awesome match, because Bret could mesh with just about anyone and I think he'd enjoy the challenge.
