World Title Situation
By Scott Keith on February 10, 2023
According to reports, if The Rock was going to be available for WrestleMania, the plan was to create a whole new world title for Raw and have Cody compete for that title. What the hell is going on? If there is any truth to that report, it sure sounds like Triple H doesn't want a Universal title anymore? Why create a new world title when you could just simply split the two world titles they merged? Roman wouldn't even have to lose one of them. Just come out and simply say in the interest of fairness the board of directors has decided to split the titles again. No damage done to Reigns.
Surely they wouldn't create a whole new temporary World title for Cody just so Rock/Reigns would be for both belts? That match would have been more than big enough on its own…it doesn't need the visual appeal of two physical belts. Does Triple H want to bring back the Big Gold Belt? Does he want to create an entirely new World title in place of the Universal championship? What would you even call it at this point…Raw World Championship? That's dumb.
That report just seems odd if true. I've been against the Universal championship from the beginning. I think it's a horrible name and just sounds like a championship from an e-fed. However we're going on 7 years now that it's been around. If they did create a whole new world title, you're starting from scratch yet again.
I think the Big Gold Belt's time has come and gone, honestly, and probably Cody would have ended up with the Winged Eagle belt. He still might. The language that they've been using around Roman and his belts has been very deliberately making it clear that they're separate titles again, so perhaps they do something with Sami getting one of them in Montreal and then Cody getting the other one at WM. I have also long hated the “Universal title” designation and I thought that “WWE title” and “World title” were a better “separate but equal” designation for the belts that they should return to.
