Mike Rebooks WWF WrestleMania Season 1999 – Part Two: St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

We continue one with our rebooking journey through the first three months of 1999 in the WWF. Last week we covered Royal Rumble 1999 (which can be found in the archives) and this week we’ll be looking at the WWF’s February offering in the form of St. Valentine’s Day Massacre from Memphis.

This was by far the best of the three pay per views the WWF put on during Mania Season of 99, so we won’t be making wholesale changes to lots of it, but there will be some tweaks and certain matches will be cut entirely.

Opening Match
WWF Hardcore Title
Title Vacant
Bob Holly Vs Al Snow
10 Minutes

Hardcore Champ the Road Dogg had to forfeit the belt due to real life issues, leading to this match being booked to crown a new Champion. I can’t really change him having to relinquish the belt, so we’ll keep this match to crown a new Champion as it’s fun for an Attitude Era brawl and features a memorable moment where both men quite literally start fighting in the river. Holly can win and we’ll build to Road Dogg coming back for his belt at WrestleMania XV, which was the original plan until Vince Russo decided to SWERVE everyone.

Match Two
Freebird Michael PS Hayes Vs Jerry The King Lawler
5 Minutes

The WWF was on a big “reality” worked/shoot kick at the time, so we’ll lean into that here with Hayes getting sick of being called Dok Hendrix and getting into a feud with fellow announcer Jerry Lawler in order to build to a match on Lawler’s home turf. I’m not going to do Heel Jim Ross in this continuity, so as soon as JR can return to the commentary booth he will and Michael Cole can go back to holding a microphone. Hayes can therefore step into the announcer feud slot, and once this is done we can make him a manager. I’m not expecting this to be a great match or anything, but it should hopefully have good heat thanks to Lawler and the promos building it up should be fun. We’ll keep it relatively short and Lawler can end up getting the win to pop the crowd.

Match Three
WWF Light Heavyweight Title
Champ: Christian Vs TAKA Michinoku
10 Minutes

Christian originally won the belt from TAKA before then dropping it to Duane Gill, and they never had a pay per view rematch, so they can have it here with Christian picking up the clean win following a hard fought contest. I’m not expecting amazing crowd reactions for this one due to the belt being treated as such an afterthought for so long, but the wrestling should be good and hopefully if they work hard they might start to garner a reaction.

Match Four
WWF Tag Team Titles
Champs: Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett w/ Debra Vs D’Lo Brown and Mark Henry w/ Ivory
10 Minutes

We’ll pretty much keep this as it was in real life, with Owen clocking Henry with the guitar so that Jarrett can pick up the win.

Match Five
WWF Intercontinental Title
Guest Referee: Billy Gunn
Champ: Ken Shamrock Vs Val Venis w/ Ryan Shamrock
10 Minutes

This is another match we’ll keep mostly the same, although we’ll shorten the length a bit as the original allotted 15 minutes was just far too long. The story is that Venis has shacked up with Ryan Shamrock in an effort to throw Ken Shamrock off his game, leading to Kenny going even more psycho than usual and causing the referee corps to refuse to take part in this match. Thus Billy Gunn, who hates both men, is drafted in to referee, and he ends up costing Shamrock the match when Shamrock gets physical with him. Gunn will lay out Venis post-match though in order to set up WrestleMania, which was a logical story that Russo ended up changing in order to surprise everyone for no reason.

Match Six
Kane and Chyna w/ Shane McMahon Vs Triple H and X-Pac
15 Minutes

Another match we’ll keep the same, as this was a decent piece of business. The story is that Chyna betrayed DX and joined up with The Corporation, so Triple H and X-Pac are coming for revenge. Chyna eventually pins Triple H due to shenanigans involving Shane McMahon in order to keep the feud going.

Semi-Main
WWF Title
Ladder Match
Champ: Mankind Vs The Rock
20 Minutes

Rather than do the Last Man Standing match draw only to do a ladder match the next night on Raw, we’ll just go straight to the ladder match here. Rock will pick up the win thanks once again to The Big Boss Man, just as he did back at our version of the Royal Rumble, thus making it two times that Boss Man has robbed Mick Foley in a Title match.

Vince McMahon Vs Stone Cold Steve Austin
10 Minutes

We’ll keep this one pretty similar to real life as well, as Austin gives Vince the beating their feud has been building to until The Big Show makes his surprise debut to attack Austin. However, Big Show will fling Austin into the cage wall and it will swing open to give him the win and send him to WrestleMania XV.

In Conclusion

I didn’t have to change too much with this one as the original show isn’t that bad, with Goldust/Bluedust and Mideon/Boss Man being the two matches we cut, which I don’t think anyone will miss if I’m being honest.

Going into WrestleMania XV we’ll start the build properly for Rock Vs Austin seeing as we now know the Main Event has been solidified. We’ll do our best to keep them from physically interacting, although we will still have Austin get Rock and The McMahons with the beer truck hose.

Undertaker hasn’t really been featured that much here yet but during the WrestleMania build we’ll start making him interact with Vince McMahon more and more, freaking Vince out with threats of going after his daughter Stephanie. This will lead to Vince sicking his own resident Corporate Monster on Taker, setting up Undertaker Vs Kane in a WrestleMania XIV rematch, although this time we’ll have a special stipulation for the match.

Mick Foley has twice been screwed by Big Boss Man now, so at WrestleMania XV he will be coming for revenge. However, it won’t be Mankind that Boss Man has to do battle with…

Now that Venis has the IC Title he has no real need for Ryan Shamrock, leading to him callously casting her aside. However, Ryan won’t let this go unpunished and will team up with a former Venis foe in the form of Goldust, helping Goldy to win the IC Title from Venis on Raw. Billy Gunn and Ken Shamrock will still have a claim to the belt though, thus setting up a big match for Mania.

Road Dogg will return and will want his Hardcore Title back, but Al Snow will also want the belt, so that sets up a logical three person feud for Mania.

We’ll stick with the storyline of Shane McMahon defeating X-Pac for his European Title, but we’ll go in a slightly different direction with their feud for Mania than what happened in real life.

That and more to be covered next month as we finish this arc off!
