What the World Was Watching: WWF Superstars – June 29, 1991

By LScisco on October 7, 2022

Vince McMahon, Randy Savage, and Roddy Piper provide commentary, concluding the taping cycle in Tucson, Arizona. Piper warns Irwin R. Schyster that if he finds out he was behind his recent tax audit, he is going to grill him.

Opening Contest: The Big Bossman (21-0-1) pins the Intruder after the Bossman Slam at 2:02:

The Intruder was Jesse Hernandez, who owned the Empire Wrestling Federation, an independent promotion in San Bernardino, California. He also worked as a referee for Herb Abrams’ UWF, a role he was also hired to do at various points by the WWF, NWA, Ladies Professional Wrestling Association (LPWA), and Women of Wrestling (WOW).

As the Bossman toys with the Intruder, the Mountie does an insert promo about how the Bossman is going to get July 4 fireworks in the face courtesy of the Mountie’s shock stick. The Bossman wins two minutes faster than he did on Prime Time, handcuffing the Intruder to the middle rope after the bell and running to the locker room.

Gene Okerlund’s Update segment says that there are rumors of a Randy Savage-Elizabeth engagement. Okerlund says that next week he will do a special interview with Elizabeth and thinks it would be great if Savage came to the ring and popped the question on Superstars.

The Berzerker (w/Mr. Fuji) (13-0) beats Larry Williams via count out at 2:24:

McMahon and Piper try to encourage Savage to pop the question next week, but he remains non-committal. Fuji dictates the Berzerker’s moves, in keeping with the Berzerker’s recent promos about how Fuji gets what he asks for.

The Texas Tornado (19-0) pins Louie Spicolli after the discus punch at 2:38:

McMahon angers his sidekicks as Piper does not want to talk about taxes and Savage does not want to talk about marriage. The squash is the usual mess of a Tornado match. This one maintains the theme of the Tornado going nuts when the jobber cheap shots him.

The Natural Disasters (w/Jimmy Hart) defeat Bob Allen & Larry Sampson when Earthquake pins Sampson after the Earthquake Splash at 2:30:

Hart tells Andre the Giant that the Natural Disasters will chop him down to size. The Disasters tag a lot but do no double team maneuvers. The finish sees Typhoon do a splash and Earthquake finish Sampson with the Earthquake Splash. Afterwards, Savage insists that the Legion of Doom just left the building.

Virgil (8-0) beats Randy Sharkey via submission to the Million Dollar Dream at 3:13:

Virgil dedicates a bodyslam in the match to Ted DiBiase as the announcers discuss how alike Virgil and his sister Virgilina are. The squash goes too long, which does Virgil no favors. He does show more variety in his offense, though, by also using a gutwrench suplex.

Sergeant Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa, and General Adnan are guests on the Funeral Parlor. Slaughter contends that Hulkamania has fizzled out like a bad July 4 firework. Paul Bearer asks Slaughter that when he is done with Hulk Hogan to please let him have the charred remains so he can put it in an urn. Slaughter promises that the next time he sees Hogan he is not going to burn him. Instead, he is going to barbecue him.

The Dragon (9-0) pins Dale Wolfe with the flying body press at 2:24:

Wolfe gets in some early shots but the Dragon somersaults over an atomic drop effort and goes to work. Piper and Savage argue over a possible engagement to Elizabeth, with Piper arguing that Savage is afraid of proposing. The Dragon gets fired up and removes his long armbands, cueing his finishing moves off the top rope.

The Legion of Doom say that Sid Justice looks big and tough, reminding them of themselves. WWF Tag Team Champions the Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart urge Sid to join Hart’s organization.

The Warlord (w/Slick) (12-2-2) defeats Larry Ludden via submission to the full nelson at 2:59:

Piper hypes the Warlord’s power and abilities, causing Savage to say that Piper should ask the Warlord to marry him. Like his match with Koko B. Ware on Prime Time, the Warlord methodically works over Ludden and wins.

Tune in next week to see Bret Hart face Haku! Also, the Rockers, Sergeant Slaughter, Jake Roberts, and the Undertaker in action! And Elizabeth will appear for an interview with Gene Okerlund, so Randy Savage might propose!

The Last Word: The WWF is dialing back the insert promos during squashes but that has the effect of making the product feel that not a lot is going on. The Natural Disasters were okay in their squash but were not impressive. Just two big guys trading tags and beating a helpless jobber. Still, their size makes them stand out in the division and they will get a big push, especially because of Earthquake’s singles credentials.
