What the World Was Watching: WWF Wrestling Challenge – June 2, 1991

Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, and Jim Neidhart continue to call the action from Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The British Bulldog’s squash that aired on Prime Time Wrestling two weeks ago is shown.

Lord Alfred Hayes’ Special Report replays how Sergeant Slaughter, Colonel Mustafa, and General Adnan beatdown a Hulk Hogan fan on Prime Time Wrestling several weeks ago. Hayes says that Hogan is seeking revenge.

Tugboat (9-3) pins Dan Johnson after a splash at 2:00:

Monsoon calls Tugboat “The big tooter.” Tugboat does an insert promo where he says he is a great white looking for prey in the WWF. Johnson stands no chance as Tugboat uses his weight to impose his will and wins his third straight match with a splash.

Non-Title Match: The Nasty Boys (WWF Tag Team Champions w/Jimmy Hart) (12-1) defeat Rick Rice & Al Burke when Jerry Sags pins Burke after the Trip to Nastyville at 3:05:

The Legion of Doom yell in the split screen about how they do not run from anyone and are coming after the Nasties. Heenan laughs at the Pit Stop on Burke, who is put away shortly thereafter with the Trip to Nastyville.

Irwin R. Schyster (3-0) pins Gary Jackson after the Write Off at 2:39:

Schyster is adjusting his look, wearing blue pants instead of brown ones. Monsoon laughs about Heenan only paying $280 in taxes last year, promising that Heenan is headed to the federal penitentiary for tax evasion. Schyster calls Jackson a tax cheat several times throughout the match. The audience is not engaged, not working up a reaction to Schyster grabbing the ropes for an abdominal stretch. After a few kicks to the breadbasket, Schyster goes back to the showers as a winner after the Write Off.

Virgil (5-0) beats Brian Costello via submission to the Million Dollar Dream at 1:51:

After Virgil tags Costello with punches, Ted DiBiase and Sensational Sherri pop up in the split screen and say that while Virgil has a good set of punches, he and Roddy Piper will soon be boxing apples and oranges when he is done with them. The referee must be in a hurry to get back to the locker room as he calls for the bell almost immediately after Virgil locks Costello in the Million Dollar Dream.

The Ultimate Warrior hypes the WBF Championship at the Taj Mahal, urging his warriors to join him.

The Mountie and Jimmy Hart are this week’s guests on the Barber Shop. The Mountie tells the Big Bossman that the WWF is his jurisdiction and he gave him a “shocking experience” to illustrate his point. Hart likens the Mountie’s cattle prod to a portable electric chair.

The Texas Tornado (17-0) pins Bob Bradley with the claw at 3:03:

After knocking Bradley to the floor, the Tornado opens the ropes to help his opponent back into the ring. That leads to the former Intercontinental champion getting sucker punched, but the Tornado quickly regains the advantage by pulling Bradley to the floor and wailing away on him. The Tornado applies a long claw and takes Bradley to the canvas with it, with someone yelling to the referee “Cover!” and the referee counts the pinfall. It takes a while for the Tornado to release the hold and when he does, he throws Bradley to the floor. With a win today, the Tornado ties the Undertaker for most wins of the year.

The Warlord (w/Slick) (8-2-1) defeats Buck Zumhoff via submission to the full nelson at 1:10:

Zumhoff almost falls on his face while running the ropes and awkwardly stands in place moments later to take a Warlord flying shoulder block. After that, the Warlord just decides to go home with the full nelson.

The Last Word: Just lots of squash and talk on today’s episode. The only thing that stood out was the Texas Tornado acting like a heel near the end of his match with Bob Bradley, but nothing ever came of that.

Backstage News*: The WWF has finalized plans for its show at Busch Stadium in St. Louis in July. The event will be called Wrestlefest ’91 and will be taped for Coliseum Video. The main event will be Hulk Hogan vs. Sergeant Slaughter for the WWF title with Randy Savage as guest referee. The other big match on the card will be the Ultimate Warrior facing the Undertaker in a casket match. The WWF reached out to St. Louis area legends like Lou Thesz, Harley Race, and Jack Brisco to appear and help with ticket sales but all three declined. Instead, Race and Dick the Bruiser will be on WCW’s card in St. Louis as guest referees. WCW is also trying to get Bruno Sammartino to appear at its next Meadowlands show and do an angle with his old protégé Larry Zbyszko.

*Sid appeared at recent television tapings in Arizona and got a big reaction when he appeared. He will work under the name “Sid Justice” and due to his reactions, Dave Meltzer believes it will squelch plans to run a main event of Sid against Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania. Instead, he speculates that the show could be headlined by Hogan going against a heel Ultimate Warrior.

*Bobby Heenan will also be stepping down as a manager. Mr. Perfect will be managed by John Tolos, who was originally supposed to manage Wayne Bloom and Mike Enos. That duo is now going to be called “The Beverly Brothers” with a gay gimmick while Tolos will be called “The Coach.”

*The reason that Perfect missed several house shows this week against the British Bulldog is that he has a back injury.

*Jobber Charles Austin, who broke his neck taking a Rocker Dropper bump last year, is now suing the WWF and the Rockers for assault and battery, negligence, and misrepresentation.

*In talent relations news, the WWF recently gave tryouts to Scott Putski, Sweet Brown Sugar, and Sir Charles. Brown Sugar is Skip Young and Sir Charles is Mark Kyle.
