Lex Luger question (take a drink)

Hi Scott,
Is the “Lex” short for “Alex”?
Is his name meant to be Alex Luger?
He reportedly took the name from Lex Luthor, and if it was the Luthor of the 80s then it’s actually short for Alexis.
