Why the Al Snow Hype?

By Scott Keith on August 12, 2021

So it's been mentioned more than once that Al Snow as a hot prospect in the mid-90s. He was said to be the “Best-Kept Secret” in wrestling, with many acting like he was the best guy without a big contract at one point. Yet in retrospect he seems like a “pretty
good” worker who just got some Japan tapes and lifted all the best shit (Northern Lights Suplex, a springboard or two, Akira Hokuto's Northern Lights Bomb finisher, etc.). His best matches overall are usually against far superior workers (the Benoit one from
ECW), and he never raised above midcard status in the WWF when he finally DID get hired on.

So what was the deal with Snow? Was he just hyped really hard by certain people? Did tape-traders love him because he was the only North American guy doing Japan's moves? By all means, he's pretty good, but I don't really see the big deal in hindsight.

He could do the Japanese stuff and cut a promo, what's not to love?
