Darsow as Smash

Was Barry Darsow signed to the WWF with something else in mind (such as a guy who reposes things) and happened to luck into the Smash gimmick, or was he signed specifically to replace Randy Colley as Smash?
Far as I know he was coming in anyway to do something else and lucked into it. But I'm sure there's a million shoot interviews where he relates the story in more detail.
