Bret Hart in WCW in early 90s

I'm reading Herb Kunze's old RSPW tidbits & several times in the early 90s he says Bret Hart is closed to or rumored to be signing with WCW. Was this based in fact or just conjecture?
Yes, he tried to claim free agency and sign with them in early 1992, but didn't realize that his contract automatically rolled over if he didn't give notice 90 days in advance of it expiring. That's one of the reasons why he dropped the title to the Mountie so abruptly – because Vince was thinking Bret was ready to bolt and he apparently just wanted to be safe. But then they worked it out and Bret got an even bigger push out of it.
