WWF Wrestling Challenge – October 9th, 1994

By Brian Bayless on February 9, 2020

October 9, 1994

From the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, WI

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Ted DiBiase

The show starts off with a clip of last week’s promo by Lex Luger on Tatanka from “Superstars.”

Tatanka w/ Ted DiBiase vs. Ron Cumberledge

Gorilla plugs Tatanka vs. Luger on the Hart Attack Tour as Tatanka chops down Cumberledge. Tatanka follows with a backbreaker as Gorilla talks about DiBiase making another huge addition to his corporation. Cumberledge ducks a few attacks and hits a crossbody for two. Cumberledge gets two counts with a small package and a sunset flip but Tatanka beats him down then uses the Papoose to Go for the win (2:41). Gorilla says that Tatanka is more impressive than ever since aligning with DiBiase.

Thoughts: Hype for the Tatanka/Luger feud here but this feud is not over enough for the amount of attention its been getting and both guys feel colder than ever since SummerSlam has ended.

Gorilla then tells us that DiBiase has signed King Kong Bundy. He talks about not being happy about this and it makes The Corporation stronger than ever. Bundy will also be in action later on in the show. They really did go all out in hyping Bundy as a major threat.

Also in action this week are Bob Holly, Owen Hart, Adam Bomb, Kwang, and Doink.

WWF Live Event News segment on the Hart Attack tour.

An ad for the Action Zone, which will debut in two weeks.

Doink the Clown w/ Dink vs. Reno Riggins

DiBiase asks Gorilla if he told us all about him signing Bundy then laughs. Doink offers Riggins some gum before the match. Riggins then chews it and then gets pissed when it makes his tongue green. Riggins attacks Doink from behind then we hear from Jerry Lawler in an insert promo as he talks trash about Doink & Dink. Doink uses one of the saddest attempts at a backslide I’ve ever seen for a two count then follows with a few arm drags. Riggins boots Doink in the face and hits a clothesline for two. Doink comes back with a sunset flip for a nearfall. Sunset flip gets two. They slug it out as DiBiase promises a surprise today then Riggins whips Doink into the corner. Riggins hits a jawbreaker for two but Doink comes back with a bridging German suplex for two then catches Riggins with a powerslam. Riggins then goes for a crossbody and Doink was supposed to roll through that and completely fucks that up too and then we get some camera cuts to the crowd and Doink wins the match (3:05).

Thoughts: Of course they hyped the Doink/Lawler feud but the most glaring part of this match was the awful performance by Doink. He looked like some guy straight out of wrestling school here. Total bush league performance. Riggins looked good, however.

We get a video package narrated by Todd Pettengill to hype up a title match between The Headshrinkers and Shawn Michaels & Diesel.

King Kong Bundy w/ Ted DiBiase vs. Rod Bell

Gorilla says that DiBiase brought Bundy into The Corporation to get some gold. Bell bounces off of Bundy then Bundy hammers away after yelling at the crowd. Bundy drops Bell with a back elbow smash then hits a knee drop and pulls Bell up before the three count. Bundy then hits an Avalanche and follows with an elbow drop (1:46). However, the bell rang after three despite Bundy demanding a five count and the ref then counts to five. Bundy taunts the crowd with a five count.

Thoughts: They seemed to mess up the ending, making it the second straight match on this show, and like on “Superstars” it was another bad performance by Bundy. He was not in ring shape and far too slow and old to look effective.

We get a clip of the Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Duke Droese match from “Superstars” this week as Bigelow won with some help by DiBiase.

The WWF never going on strike ad airs.

Bob “Spark Plug” Holly vs. Red Tyler

Gorilla notes that Holly is part of the New Generation. He then talks once again about the WWF never going on strike as Holly takes control of the match. Gorilla now hypes the Hart Attack tour as Tyler hammers away. Tyler uses a slam then hits a clothesline in the corner. Holly fights back and uses a knee drop as DiBiase gloats over his Corporation. Holly grabs a chin lock as DiBiase wants to know what race Holly has ever won. Gorilla tells us that Holly will be in the Snowball Derby in Florida as Holly catches Tyler with a powerslam. Holly then says he is “heading to the finish line” and uses a flying body press for the win (2:52).

Thoughts: They actually spent some time on Holly’s race car driver gimmick instead of spending the whole match plugging other feuds and house shows like when he usually is on TV. Maybe a push of sorts is coming.

The Undertaker & Paul Bearer once again talk about Yokozuna to hype their casket matches on the Hart Attack Tour.

Kwang w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Kevin Krueger

Kwang knees Krueger in the gut then hits a roundhouse kick. Kwang spits his mist into the air Gorilla plugs George Steele’s part in the film “Ed Wood.” Kwang drops Krueger with a spinning heel kick as Whippleman tells us that Kwang is the best WWF offers today then Kwang puts Krueger away with another spinning heel kick (1:15). Gorilla then promises we will see clips of “Ed Wood” later on in the show.

Thoughts: The main thing here was plugging Steele’s appearance in Ed Wood. Kwang is a complete afterthought.

The announcers plug the newest edition of “WWF Magazine” that features Bret Hart on the cover.

Pettengill narrates a video package on this past Monday night’s Jim Neidhart vs. British Bulldog match that also saw Bob Backlund confront Bret Hart, who was in Bulldog’s corner.

Owen Hart w/ Jim Neidhart vs. Gary Jackson

The announcers talk about Backlund as Owen works the arm. Now the announcers talk about Owen as Jackson fights back. Jackson puts his head down and gets booted in the face. Owen then flexes after using a back drop then avoids a dropkick and uses the sharpshooter for the win (2:10). After the match, Owen keeps the hold on then Neidhart enters the ring as DiBiase cannot wait for Owen to put the glasses on Jackson then snap them off of his face.

Thoughts: Hype for the Owen/Bulldog matches around the house show circuit as the Hart Family feud continues.

The clip of George Steele in “Ed Wood” airs.

We get the Razor Ramon confessional “New Generation” ad. The tag line is “put your faith in us.”

Adam Bomb vs. Rock Werner

Gorilla taunts DiBiase & Bigelow being scared of Bomb. Werner decides to slap Bomb across the face and immediately gets dropped. The announcers plug Bigelow vs. Luger for RAW as Bomb hits a slam. Bomb now uses a snap suplex before applying a chin lock. DiBiase once again gloats over his men winning today but Gorilla taunts him for not having any gold. Bomb now drops Werner with a back elbow smash then dropkicks him out of the ring. Bomb rolls Werner back inside then slingshots back in with a clothesline for the win (2:33).

Thoughts: They are setting up for the eventual Bomb/Bigelow match but Bomb had shoulder surgery right after this show was taped. This is the last show from the TV tapings that immediately followed after SummerSlam.

Another Live Event News segment on the Hart Attack tour.

We see DiBiase on the phone claiming he is buying additional talent.

Next week, we have an interview with Bret Hart. In action are Bam Bam Bigelow, British Bulldog, Jeff Jarrett, and the Smoking Gunns.

Final Thoughts: There were not any exclusive segments this week and the main focus was getting over Bundy as a major player in his return to the company. With Action Zone getting tons of hype and the syndicated shows taking a hit it appears that Challenge will remain as one of the least important shows from the company.
