Goldberg’s Initial WWE Run

Do you happen to know why Goldberg's initial WWE run,(and contract, apparently), was only for 1 year from 2003-2004? Did either he or the company opt out, or was it always to be for only a year?
He was very, very expensive and Vince apparently didn't have much faith in his ability to get over. Plus then Goldberg himself had basically had enough by 2004, so I think it was pretty mutual. I never heard that it was supposed to be for longer, at any rate.
