WWF Wrestling Challenge – August 14th, 1994

By Brian Bayless on December 4, 2019

August 14, 1994

From the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, OH

Your hosts are Jim Ross and Ted DiBiase

Mabel w/ Oscar vs. Ryan Scott

DiBiase refers to Mabel/Jarrett at SummerSlam as “rap vs. country.” He also says that Jarrett is much smarter. Mabel overpowers Scott with ease as we hear from Mabel in an insert promo saying he asked for this match due to not liking Mabel, Oscar, and rap music and plans to get rid of all three at SummerSlam. Scott lands a pair of clotheslines but gets knocked down. Mabel then hits an elbow drop and follows with a slam before an avalanche in the corner. Mabel now hits a short-arm clothesline before a leg drop from the middle rope gets the win (3:04). After the match, we get some fireworks then rapping from Oscar.

Thoughts: They are now trying to add a storyline for this match by having Jarrett say he hates Mabel due to rap music. I will say that on his own, Mabel does seem to be getting over at a moderate level.

WWF Live Event News segment on the Summer Sizzler Tour.

Jeff Jarrett vs. Ben Jordan

Ross calls Jarrett the “Milli Vanilli” of Country Music. Jarrett grabs a headlock on the mat and works that for a bit. Jarrett then connects with a dropkick and tries for the figure four but Jordan turns that into a small package for a two count. Jarrett then immediately beats down Jordan and works the leg before finally putting Jordan away with the figure four (2:11).

Thoughts: More selling of the Jarrett vs. Mabel match as rap vs. country.

The Paul Bearer comments from “Superstars” are shown.

Smoking Gunns vs. Tom Stone & Butler Stevens

DiBiase says that he has the real Undertaker then calls out Bearer for “spewing garbage.” Stone & Stevens attack before the bell but end up getting dropkicked. The Gunns clear Stone from the ring then hit Stevens with a double Russian leg sweep. The Gunns stay in control as DiBiase continues to say Bearer doesn’t have The Undertaker then put Stevens away with The Sidewinder (2:15). DiBiase then talks about leading IRS & Bam Bam Bigelow to victory at SummerSlam.

Thoughts: The match was a backdrop for the announcers to talk about The Undertaker storyline.

“King of Harts” Owen Hart w/ Jim Neidhart vs. Ron Cumberledge

The announcers talk about the steel cage stipulation for Owen vs. Bret at SummerSlam. Owen attacks Cumberledge from behind as Ross talks about Bruce Hart’s appearance on the King’s Court this past Monday night. Owen hits a backbreaker then hammers away as we hear from Neidhart in an insert promo saying the whole world will be watching Owen become the next champion. Owen stays in control then puts Cumberledge away with the Sharpshooter as the announcers plug Owen vs. 1-2-3 Kid this coming Monday on RAW (3:31).

Thoughts: More hype for the World Title match at SummerSlam with stress on the steel cage stipulation to keep Neidhart and the rest of the Hart family from interfering.

Hype for Lex Luger vs. Crush and Typhoon vs. Diesel on “Sunday Night Slam.”

Raymond Rougeau welcomes Razor Ramon to the ring. He asks Razor about having Walter Payton in his corner at SummerSlam to keep an eye on Shawn Michaels. Razor says no one can beat two top WWF superstars at the same time, not even himself, so he got himself the the fastest, most versatile, and hardest-hitting running back in the NFL in Payton. Razor then says there is nothing he likes better than a good fight and promises Diesel will go down at SummerSlam and vows to reclaim his Intercontinental Title. Solid promo with Razor explaining why he went out to get Payton in his corner as he promises to recapture the Intercontinental Title.

Kwang w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Scott Avery

Kwang beats on Avery as the announcers talk about the Whippleman vs. Bomb feud. Kwang takes Avery outside then brings him back in as the announcers list off various house shows. Kwang stays in control and puts Avery away with a spinning heel kick (1:24).

Thoughts: They mentioned the feud between Whippleman/Bomb as well as hyping up house shows in the upcoming market (CT & NY).

The Leslie Nielsen segment from “Superstars” airs.

SummerSlam Report with Todd Pettengill.

Duke “The Dumpster” Droese vs. George Anderson

The announcers talk about next week’s Sunday Night Slam show and the SummerSlam Hotline with the poll on whether or not Luger has sold out. DiBiase assures us Luger is with The Corporation as Ross has his doubts. Droese works the arm for a bit as we see an insert of the newest edition of “WWF Magazine.” Droese then yells that its time to take out the trash and uses a corkscrew elbow for the win (1:23). After the match, Anderson attacks Droese but that fails then Droese sticks a Rubbermaid trash can over his head before leaving.

Thoughts: They briefly mentioned the Droese/Lawler feud as that has wrapped up around the house show circuit so they mostly focused on Sunday Night Slam and the SummerSlam Hotline.

Another Live Event News segment.

An ad to hype SummerSlam airs.

In action next week are Lex Luger, Bob Backlund, The Headshrinkers, and The Undertaker.

Final Thoughts: The only exclusive part of the show was the Razor interview. Other than that it featured generic squash match wins and SummerSlam hype as the show is now just less than two weeks away.
