WWF Superstars of Wrestling – June 25, 1994

By Brian Bayless on October 25, 2019

June 25, 1994

From the Erie Civic Center in Erie, PA

During the credits, they stopped briefly with a picture of Owen Hart wearing the crown and the announcement of him winning the King of the Ring.

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Jerry “The King” Lawler

Pierre w/ Johnny Polo vs. Typhoon

Typhoon shoves down Pierre to start. Pierre complains about hair pulling then gets dropped as we learn Ted DiBiase’s Undertaker will be in action on the show. Typhoon knocks Pierre through the ropes with a shoulder tackle then Pierre returns and tries a full nelson that Typhoon breaks with ease. Typhoon then applies a full nelson and do the spot where the heel tries to break by putting their feet on the top rope and the face breaks causing the heel to drop on the mat. However, Polo distracts Typhoon and that allows Pierre to attack from behind. Pierre tries everything he can to knock down Typhoon and finally does with a missile dropkick that gets two. Gorilla plugs Typhoon vs. Yokozuna for the “Summer Sizzler” tour as Pierre continues to hammer away. The announcers now talk about Owen Hart winning the King of the Ring tournament as Typhoon fights back and hits an avalanche then knocks Polo off of the apron and puts Pierre away with a splash (5:52) 1/2*.

Thoughts: They are trying to push Typhoon’s return as a big deal since he is replacing Earthquake as Yokozuna’s opponent on house shows but no one cares. This match was lousy to boot. This was the final TV appearance I believe of Pierre in his Quebecer gear and Polo’s final appearance as a manager.

King of the Ring Report with Todd Pettengill.

Gorilla plugs the latest edition of “Wrestling Spotlight” magazine with Bret Hart on the cover.

Well Dunn w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. John Paul & Gary Sabaugh

The announcers talk about Jim Neidhart returning at King of the Ring with Gorilla saying that his sources have told him that Neidhart has been telling Owen to turn against his family. Well and Paul work a decent sequence as Lawler say that both Owen & Neidhart will be his guests on the “King’s Court” this Monday night on RAW. Well Dunn take control of the match until Paul gets his foot up as Dunn comes off the ropes. Sabaugh tags in and runs wild but Dunn hits a spinning heel kick in the corner then Dunn follows with a body block for the win (2:58). Gorilla then tells us that there is a bright future ahead for Well Dunn and does so with minimal conviction.

Thoughts: Since the Tag division is depleted we now have Well Dunn back on the scene. They are not over whatsoever. The focus on commentary was building suspense for Owen & Neidhart’s King’s Court appearance.

WWF Live Event News that once again focuses on the Marathon Tour. And the 7/5 Nassau Coliseum show will be recapped next week, featuring the 60 minute marathon match between Bret and Owen.

Sparky Plugg vs. George South

Lawler makes fun of Plugg for being from Alabama then jokes about Plugg being so Southern that he is related to himself. Plugg works the arm to start as Lawler continues to make fun of Plugg. Gorilla plugs the encore PPV airing of King of the Ring as Plugg hits a pair of slams. South boots Plugg in the gut but gets caught with an arm drag. South fights back and roughs up Plugg in the corner. He gets a one count with a slam but Plugg fights back. South boots Plugg in the face to counter a back drop but soon after that Plugg floats over in the corner and ends up using a rollup for the win (2:47).

Thoughts: Plugg sold an awful lot for South here and won in a fluky manner for reasons I cannot fathom. Lawler’s digs at Plugg were funny.

Gorilla continues to tease Lawler over wearing sunglasses because Piper gave him a black eye but Lawler refuses to take them off.

PJ Walker vs. The Undertaker w/ Ted DiBiase

Undertaker boots Walker then chokes him out in the corner as we hear a smattering of boos. We get more choking and booing as DiBiase is taunting the crowd. Undertaker hits a jumping clothesline as the crowd is getting restless then Undertaker puts Walker away with a Tombstome (2:10). After the match, the spotlight comes on and Undertaker tries to attack Walker but is stopped by DiBiase, who then entices him with cash.

Thoughts: This was certainly something. First off, it was painfully obvious this was not the original Undertaker and especially when he did the hair flip when covering after the tombstone. According to the “Wrestling Observer Newsletter,” there were reports from the tapings from this weekend that one city had a large amount of “Bullshit” chants and based on what happened here it very well could have been this taping but guess we will see what happened on “Challenge.” And they even introduced him as DiBiase’s Undertaker which was telling and since they did that you’d figure maybe Gorilla, who over the years has always been the guy to call out bullshit, would have snuffed this out but they all acted like it was the original Undertaker in the ring.

Lord Alfred Hayes narrates a still picture package of the King of the Ring to hype the encore airing, which is on Tuesday.

1-2-3 Kid vs. Jeff Hardy

Hardy offers a handshake but ends up taking Kid down by the arm. Kid then runs over Hardy but is taken down with a hip toss. Kid applauds Hardy then catches him with a kick after an Irish whip sequence. Kid then hits a running leg drop as the announcers talk about Alundra Blayze taking Kid skydiving. Kid stays in control while mostly using kicks but eats boot on a charge in the corner. Hardy then heads up top and whiffs on a Whisper in the Wind then Kid uses a for the win (2:57).

Thoughts: This was a competitive, fast-paced match and Hardy really looked good here. Kid is being pushed as part of the New Generation campaign.

The announcers hype the “Bloopers, Bleeps, and Bodyslams” Coliseum Home Video release that also features a match between Lawler and Randy Savage.

The WWF New Generation video airs.

Kwang w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Chris Hamrick

Kwang beats on Hamrick as Lawler promises to finish off Savage at the Nassau Coliseum. Kwang blocks a sunset flip attempt then soon after that catches Hamrick with a thrust kick as Hamrick was coming off of the top rope and that gets the win (2:27).

Thoughts: This was really to hype Lawler vs. Savage at the Nassau show.

Another King of the Ring report from Pettengill.

Guest ring announcer Brian Young, wearing a Luger shirt, announces the next match.

Lex Luger vs. Barry Horowitz

Horowitz attacks Luger from behind and continues to hammer away. The announcers continue to talk about the Summer Sizzler tour as Horowitz gets a two count with a leg drop. Luger then hulks up and takes Horowitz down with a knee lift. He then hits a clothesline and powerslam before the Rebel Rack gets the win (1:37). Luger then poses with the spotlight on and fireworks blaring.

Thoughts: No talk about what DiBiase said at the end of RAW when he talked about buying Luger. Even at this point Luger is still being pushed as one of the top guys in the company but that would soon be changing.

Another WWF Live Event news segment to hype the Marathon tour.

Next week, Paul Bearer will be a guest on the “Heartbreak Hotel.” Also, IRS vs. Doink the Clown and Jim Neidhart will be in action.

Final Thoughts: The theme was about what happened at the King of the Ring. However, DiBiase’s Undertaker was a flop as was the returns of Typhoon and Well Dunn. Gorilla seemed less irritable here than on RAW but playing off of Lawler was easy. Anyway, next week we are “treated” to IRS vs. Doink and a Paul Bearer appearance
