WWF Monday Night RAW – May 9th, 1994

By Brian Bayless on September 26, 2019

May 9, 1994

From the Green Mountain State Arena in Morrisville, VT

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and “Macho Man” Randy Savage

The show starts off with a clip from last week when Earthquake issued a challenge to Yokozuna. And tonight Yokozuna will give his answer on the “King’s Court.”

Also for tonight is Razor Ramon vs. Kwang in a King of the Ring qualifying match.

King of the Ring Qualifying Match: Razor Ramon vs. Kwang w/ Harvey Whippleman

Savage reluctantly predicts Kwang to win due to his martial arts skills. We get a lock up then Razor slaps Kwang across the face. Kwang comes back with a throat thrust then hammers away in the corner. Razor fights back then clotheslines Kwang over the top rope. Kwang immediately gets up onto the apron but Razor knocks him down. They repeat that a couple more times until Kwang snaps Razor’s neck off of the ropes. We see a replay of that then Kwang takes Razor down with a hook kick. Kwang stays in control until he misses a charge and rams his shoulder against the post. Razor works the arm now as Harvey yells at the ref. Razor hits a crossbody for a two count then goes back to the arm. Kwang comes back with a spinning heel kick then targets the neck. Vince tells us that Razor broke his nose in his match against Diesel last week then Kwang cuts off a comeback with a mat slam. We go to break and return with Kwang working a side headlock. Razor escapes and fires away then ducks a spin kick and hits an uranage as both men are down. Razor drapes his arm across Kwang’s chest for a two count then Razor wins a slugfest. Razor sets up for a super back suplex but Kwang breaks that up with a back elbow smash. Kwang comes off the middle rope with a crossbody but Razor rolls through for a two count. Kwang gets a nearfall with a spin kick but Razor cuts him off with a knee lift. Razor tries to get Kwang up for the Razor’s Edge but falls down as the announcers chalk it up to Razor being gassed. In reality, it appeared that Kwang sandbagged Razor going up. Razor then avoids a spin kick and soon after that hits Kwang with the Razor’s Edge for the win (9:43) ***.

Thoughts: Good match that was mostly all action. Even in defeat against Bret Hart and now Razor Kwang is still getting a lot of shine but at the same time it does label him as strictly midcard talent. Anyway, Razor now looks to avenge his Intercontinental Title loss by attempting to win the KotR Tournament.

King of the Ring Report with Todd Pettengill. We learn next week, Thurman “Sparky” Plugg vs. Bam Bam Bigelow will be a King of the Ring qualifying match. We also see part of Piper’s “Bottom Line” segments. same as last week, to hype his match against Lawler.

Crush w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Raymond Roy

Vince plugs Crush vs. Lex Luger as part of the WrestleMania Revenge tour then says Crush is drug-free and has his physique through hard work and genetics. I bet that was the case. Roy almost rolls up Crush for the win then Crush comes back with a thrust kick. Crush chops Roy down as the announcers talk about whether or not Yokozuna will accept Earthquake’s challenge. The announcers now talk about Doink appearing tonight and about even more Undertaker sightings. Crush then press slams Roy then hits the heart punch for the win (2:56).

Thoughts: They briefly plugged Crush’s matches against Luger on the WrestleMania Revenge tour before talking about other happening in the promotion, mainly whether or not Yokozuna will accept Earthquake’s challenge.

Pettengill lists off dates for the WrestleMania Revenge tour.

The Duke Droese vignette of him saying no heap of garbage is too big to prevent him from climbing to the top of the WWF airs.

We see the clip of Dink getting tormented by Jeff Jarrett dressed as Doink last week on “Superstars.”

Doink the Clown w/ Dink vs. Mike Terrace

Doink takes Terrace down as Jarrett calls into RAW. Jarrett laughs over what he did to Dink then insults Savage. Doink stays in control of the match then puts Terrace away with the Whoopie Cushion, complete with a sound effect (2:28).

Thoughts: More hype for this cold Doink/Jarrett feud. Again, Dink was a flop and Ray Apollo as Doink was not able to make this character work as a babyface. Jarrett has been doing good heel work here but without an over babyface its all going to waste.

We get a piece on Earthquake. He talks about being 24-0 as a Sumo Wrestler and said it was the best record for any foreigner. Earthquake then said he became an even bigger star in the WWF and has a lot more to prove.

King’s Court with guests Yokozuna, Mr. Fuji, and Jim Cornette. Lawler insults Piper’s movies before bringing out his guests. Cornette talks about Earthquake’s sumo background but jokes that was in prehistoric times. Cornette also says the athletes of today are bigger and stronger than yesterday then talks about being bilingual and how the word Yokozuna means the grand champion of all sumo wrestlers. Lawler points out how Earthquake has run his mouth then Cornette said everyone knows Yokozuna will win the match then proposes they do a sumo match. Lawler says its a brilliant idea but Earthquake is a coward and will not accept. Cornette then tells Lawler to see if Earthquake will accept the match because he is the only guy that can get the scoop. The promo by Cornette was long-winded and not particularly effective but at this point its clear Yokozuna is being shunted down the card so the excitement and anticipation for his matches and feuds have lessened.

We see a landscaper talk about seeing The Undertaker sleeping in the trench they were digging before lunch. Undertaker then disappeared soon thereafter. What a segment.

Mabel w/ Oscar vs. Mike Bell

Bell attacks Mabel and hammers away but Mabel fights back and chops him hard a few times. Mabel clotheslines Bell as Savage is handed an anonymous, unverified note that Earthquake has accepted the sumo challenge. Mabel uses a vertical suplex on Bell now Savage says its now official that Earthquake has accepted the challenge. The crowd chants “whoomp there it is” then Mabel uses an uranage for the win (2:28).

Thoughts: With zero mention of Mo its clearer than ever Mabel’s singles push is the focus as he is set to face Pierre in the King of the Ring qualifying match on “Superstars.”

Lawler is backstage with Earthquake and asks him about next week’s sumo match then laughs and asks if he is nuts. Earthquake yells at Lawler then promises to kick Yokozuna’s “butt” next week. Lawler then says he feels some tremors but that its just Earthquake’s knees shaking as Earthquake gets in Lawler’s face as the show ends. Lawler was good in this role.

Final Thoughts: The KoTR qualifying match was good while the rest of the show focused on Earthquake/Yokozuna. We get another KotR qualifying match next week too along with the sumo match as we are getting closer to the PPV.
