Outgrown pro wrestling or should it be more mature?
By Scott Keith on September 25, 2019
Hey Scott,
I've been off and on pro wrestling for the past 18 years after being a devoted watcher, especially during the Monday Night Wars. It just has never recaptured that magic I felt back then. Of course, back then I was young in my teens through my early 20's so it makes me wonder if the main thing that's changed is me more than the product itself. As I rewatch clips of older shows during the Monday Night Wars, I indeed cringe at many things I marked out for back then just as I cringe at most of today's product so this isn't really about comparing different eras. The enjoyment I now get from wrestling are mainly the matches along with the personalities of some of the wrestlers but the gimmicks and angles just don't do it for me anymore. Sure enough, when I watch an actual show now, I get embarrassed when a non-fan walks into the room and sees what I'm seeing like the whole Bray Wyatt, Firefly and Fiend stuff. I know the WWE markets towards kids first and foremost so it was with great anticipation to me when AEW originally announced that they would offer a more mature, different, and reality-based product. Unfortunately, all I've seen from them so far is more nonsense like a stupid librarian stereotype gimmick, a guy who pours baby oil on himself during matches, and a guy who works with his hands in his pockets (though it was hilarious the first time I saw it) among other stupidity. That brings me to my point: I'm 39. Have I just outgrown wrestling as a whole show or can/should there be another alternative that is mature or at least doesn't insult an adult's intelligence? As it stands, I could probably overlook the nonsense and focus on the matches but even that is trying given the stupid booking we've been getting on both WWE and AEW. I seem to be in the minority with the booking aspect because the wrestlers I want to be booked better are those the reviewers and posters here have no issues with how they are booked. So maybe it's just me. Thoughts?
There's a ZILLION alternatives out there readily available these days all fighting for your streaming dollar. I'd get New Japan World and subscribe to OTT Wrestling on YouTube and you'll be set. New Japan will 100% cover everything you're looking for, with English commentary, for 999 Yen per month.
