WWF Superstars – April 30th, 1994

By Brian Bayless on September 23, 2019

April 30, 1994

From the Rochester War Memorial Auditorium in Rochester, NY

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Jerry “The King” Lawler

The show starts off with a video package on the leading up today’s Intercontinental Title match between Razor Ramon and Diesel.

Also in action this week are Mabel, Heavenly Bodies, and Sparky Plugg. Plus, an interview with Dink.

Mabel w/ Oscar vs. Jim Massenger

Vince talks about Mr. Perfect being suspended indefinitely for refusing to face Lex Luger. We also see a new entrance set that features a ramp and we get new name graphics that feature the height and weight of the wrestlers. Vince also says that Mabel weighed in at 503 lbs this morning. Mabel tosses Massenger down to break up a waist lock then knocks him down again. Vince asks Lawler about Doink the Clown being on vacation then talks about Roddy Piper badmouthing him on the “Bottom Line” before saying the “King’s Court” is the best show ever. Mabel slams Massenger then works the leg. Mabel now hits a spinning heel kick then puts Massenger away with a DDT (2:25).

Thoughts: Mo was barely even mentioned here, with Lawler asking his whereabouts and never got an answer, so its clear they are testing out Mabel as a singles wrestler. And that would be more evident on “Wrestling Challenge.”

WWF Live Event News hypes up the WrestleMania Revenge tour. New matches announced are the Headshrinkers & Afa vs. The Quebecers & Johnny Polo and Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Mabel.

WWF Intercontinental Title Match: Diesel w/ Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon (c)

Vince wants to know if Monday’s attack on Razor will have any effect in this match. Razor runs right into the ring and hammers away on Diesel. Razor sets up for the Razor’s Edge but Diesel breaks that up with a back drop. Razor ducks underneath a big boot then punches Diesel through the ropes. Shawn encourages Diesel to go back into the ring then after a struggle uses a neck snap from the apron. Diesel clotheslines Razor before hammering away in the corner. Diesel uses a side slam for a nearfall then torpedos him into the corner. Diesel stays on the attack as we go to break. The match returns with Diesel hitting an elbow drop for two as Vince tells us that Diesel kept beating on Razor during the break. Diesel cranks Razor’s neck as Lawler credits himself into tricking Razor to take this match. Diesel applies a rear chinlock but Razor breaks that up with an electric chair drop as both men are down. Razor is up first and crawls over to make a pin but it only gets two. Razor fires away then boots Diesel in the face before a flying bulldog gets a two count. Razor slams Diesel for two then Shawn gets up onto the apron. Razor punches Shawn off of the apron then Diesel knees Razor in the gut. Shawn now unties the turnbuckle pad then cushion’s Diesel’s blow in the corner and flies out to the floor. However, Diesel ends up reversing an Irish whip to send Razor into the exposed steel then off of the rebound hits Razor with the Jackknife and wins to become the new Intercontinental Champion (5:49 shown) **1/2. Diesel takes the belt to show Shawn, who had no clue as he was out on the floor, then Shawn jumps on Diesel to celebrate as the two leave together. The ref checks on Razor as Vince points out again how there was exposed steel.

Thoughts: Good match that told a fine story of Razor trying to overcome Monday’s attack and the interference of Shawn but came up short. We know have Diesel as the new Intercontinental Champion. Razor really looked good here and Diesel was able to hold up his end of the match, which was featured on quite a few compilation tapes such as “1994 Year in Review,” “Greatest Wrestling Stars of the 90’s,” and “Kliq Rules.”

We now see Lawler use his Royal Magistrator to draw how Diesel ran over Razor Ramon.

Sparky Plugg vs. Tony DeVito

Vince predicts that Razor will recapture the title at some point during the WrestleMania Revenge tour. Plugg hits DeVito with a flurry of offense as Lawler rags on Plugg. Vince then asks Lawler why he humiliated Nikolai Volkoff last week on RAW but Lawler also jokes about that too and gets in digs at Piper in the process. Plugg hits DeVito with a flying clothesline then a suplex before applying a chin lock as Vince talks about Razor likely not being at 100% after Monday’s attack. Plugg stays in control then hits the Pit Stop Plunge for the win (2:47). We see Volkoff in the front row as he is back in the crowd.

Thoughts: They used this match as a backdrop to hype Razor vs. Diesel on the WrestleMania Revenge Tour, talk about Nikolai Volkoff’s financial difficulties, and played up the Lawler/Piper feud. The last item is really starting to intensify.

King of the Ring Report with Todd Pettengill. He compares this tournament to the Boston Marathon and NCAA Basketball Tournament in terms of endurance. We learn that Scott Steiner vs. IRS will take place next week as a tournament qualifying match.

We get another Duke “The Dumpster” Droese vignette. He is at the waste facility saying there is a lot of cleaning up to do in the WWF then calls out Adam Bomb and Mr. Perfect before saying he is going to clean house. This character is so limited among other things.

Heavenly Bodies w/ Jim Cornette vs. PJ Walker & Mike Khoury

Prichard grinds Khoury’s face into the mat as Vince hypes up The Quebecers vs. The Headshrinkers Tag Team Title match this Monday night on RAW. The announcers talk about that as the Bodies stay in control of the match. Vince runs down dates of the WrestleMania Revenge tour and how to become a guest ring announcer at some of the NY shows. Walker tags in and fires away but whiffs on a crossbody as Lawler craps all over New York City. The Bodies stay in control as the announcers talk about everything but this match until the Bodies use a guillotine crossbody for the win (3:30).

Thoughts: Another match used as a backdrop to discuss other happening in the promotion. The wings on the Bodies jackets are truly an awful look.

An ad hyping the King of the Ring airs.

Jerry Lawler welcomes Dink to the interview platform. He tells the crowd to not confuse this with the King’s Court. Dink comes out wearing a baseball hat sideways while holding a ball and a glove. Lawler taunts Dink and cracks jokes about him being small and this goes on for a while until we see Doink come out holding a box. Doink is apparently not on vacation. Doink then takes two pies out from the box and gets the crowd to cheer him but instead Doink smushes them in Dink’s face. Doink now sprays silly string all over Dink as Vince wants to know if Doink has gone back to his evil ways. Doink now puts whipped cream all over Dink, who ends up rolling off of the platform as Doink laughs. We now see Doink unmask and undo his ponytail to reveal himself as Jeff Jarrett. We now hear Jarrett address Doink and says he who laughs last laughs best. Vince is absolutely irate and wants Doink to get revenge. I thought this whole angle was good but the problem is that Dink is not over at all. Both Lawler and Jarrett were great but there is only so much heat you can get on a babyface no one cares about.

Mike Colb is the guest ring announcer. He is at least 40 years old and has a bit of a creepy look.

Bam Bam Bigelow w/ Luna Vachon vs. Jason Headings

Lawler comes back laughing as Vince is still pissed. Headings tries to elude Bigelow but ends up getting caught with a slam. Vince calls out Lawler for plotting that attack with Jarrett then says he has embarrassed the WWF and owe an apology to all of the “little people” in the world. Bigelow beats on Headings as Lawler said he was looking for Piper at a Children’s Hospital in Toronto. Vince says that Piper was filming Robocop the TV show as Headings tries to fight back but Bigelow breaks up a sunset flip with a sit-down splash and gets the win (2:36).

Thoughts: And they used this match to talk more about the Lawler/Piper feud with Lawler getting a lot more personal with his insults.

Another WWF Live Event News segment airs to hype the WrestleMania Revenge tour.

We now cut backstage to see Shawn & Diesel leave the arena in a limo celebrating through the roof.

We now see a traffic cop tell us that he saw The Undertaker sit up in a hearse before disappearing during a funeral procession.

Next week in action are Owen Hart, 1-2-3 Kid, Jeff Jarrett, and Lex Luger. Plus, the King of the Ring qualifying match of Scott Steiner vs. IRS. Plus, Ted DiBiase as guest on the “Heartbreak Hotel” and more.

The show ends with the clip of Shawn & Diesel leaving the ring with the Intercontinental Title.

Final Thoughts: Big show this week with the Intercontinental Title switching hands. We also had tons of hype for the WrestleMania Revenge tour and Lawler talked a lot of trash about Piper to set up their feud. Also, there were some more production changes as they are trying to do something to spruce up these smaller venues.
