Shifting from Sundays

By Scott Keith on September 6, 2019

We all know that football season plays a part in hurting Raw’s ratings, but does the return of Sunday Night Football have a similar effect on PPVs? And if it does (or even if it doesn’t), why doesn’t WWE in the Network Era do any of their big shows on different nights?

When I first stared watching wrestling, WrestleMania was in the afternoon – which would seem appealing to go back to rather than expect everyone to stay awake until 1:00 AM. Plus, SummerSlam was on a Monday and Survivor Series was on Thanksgiving or the night before. Wouldn’t it clear up a lot of issues with these bloated PPVs by moving at least a couple of them away from Sunday nights where they don’t have to worry about people needing to go to bed or preferring to watch football, Walking Dead, etc.?

At the very least, AEW doing 100,000 buys on a Saturday night without a TV show should have gotten someone’s attention that maybe every PPV doesn’t have to be Sunday night… Or was the hour of our lives we’ll never get back known as Smackville the answer to that? They’d have been better off bringing back Taboo Tuesday.

Apparently Smackville and shows like that do really well on the Network, though, and there's been talk of doing PPV shows on different days. Like they did with the Saudi shows. It's just that wrestling fans (and Vince himself) are creatures of habit, and it can take time and a lot of tries to do new things.
