Could AEW become nWo Nitro?

By Scott Keith on August 3, 2019

Hey Scott, just a weird thought I have after binge-watching a lot of shoot interview clips the last few days.

Yes, I know, they only had three shows so far, but it does feel eerily similar to the WCW/nWo dynamic. The Elite used ROH as their playground for three years and made them even lamer and more horrible than they were before, dump them when they had the opportunity, and now they have their own show/promotion with all of their friends around.

So far, AEW comes across as a vanity project for the Bucks and Omega to do their dumb comedy and style of matches, Cody desperately trying to be Triple H/Flair with overly long (ahem, dramatic) matches, and Brandi… to be Stephanie McMahon I suppose. For their first TV show, I expect her to win whatever they have planned to crown the first women's champion (battle royale where Meh Kong eliminates everybody before stepping out to let Brandi win maybe?), Cody to have another ridiculously long match with Guevara, and the Elite to do their thing to Jericho and whoever else.

Anyway, could AEW turn into the planned nWo Nitro which was this great idea in theory but didn't make any sense in practice? You'd have to think the nWo show would have ended up being a vehicule to show how great and cool Hogan/Nash/Hall were and the rest of the crew far behind feuding with them and/or being background characters.

Now that I think about it, that is what ended up happening anyway, isn't it?

The nWo was a storyline. AEW is a completely different incorporated company that has already sold out multiple arenas. It's a stretch.
