Lucha Underground Implosion
By Scott Keith on July 29, 2019
Awhile ago in some post you mentioned that "LU imploded." What exactly happened? I remember that some wrestlers sued them for some reason, but nothing specific. Was it simply because of low ratings?
Combination of stuff. The parent company of Lucha Underground signed a whole bunch of guys to restrictive contracts with promises of money and steady work, but then ratings started to drop and they were no longer making enough money from the TV show to pay the talent. So everyone wanted out and LU was like "Um, yeah, but you signed this contract and we're just waiting for the next season to start shooting, so no" and then a bunch of people were like "OK, so either start shooting another season or I'm gonna go work for AEW and ROH" and LU was like "No, really, the money is coming any day now…" and it all went south from there. Lawyers got involved and a surprising number of talent are still locked into LU contracts with vague promises of a shooting date any day now, while many others had the money to take it court and escaped pretty easily from the company. Technically, the promotion still exists and is just "on hiatus", but COME ON.
