The Can-Ams and the Hogan/Warrior “money match”

By Scott Keith on July 27, 2019

Hello,
Thanks for answering my questions about the house show formulas. I'd like to follow up on a point you made about the Can-Ams occasionally headlining against the Hart Foundation. Given how over they were, it seems obvious that the Can-Ams would have won
the belts had Zenk not flaked out. Would they have been intended to be long-term champions? And how would Demolition catching fire have changed things? If Martel and Zenk had initially been envisioned as getting a long reign, would they have changed course
and transitioned to Demolition as happened with Strike Force? Or were the Demos where things were heading all along?
While I've got your ear, Hogan/Warrior without doubt came off as epically epic. But is there cause to question how big it really was? The PPV did something like 150k fewer buys than WM5; as far as I know, the closed-circuit numbers were negligible, and
even the extent to which they drew the house is possibly open to interpretation: if I'm not mistaken, they sold as many as 20k tickets before a single match was announced. With all those factors considered, for as huge as it felt during the build-up and the
show itself, can it really be considered a "money match"?
Thanks for your time, once again.
I don't think the Can-Ams were long-term either, and I think Martel was turning on Zenk and going heel either way. Tito mostly just filled in the role with another guy.
As for Hogan/Warrior, it was well known to be a big disappointment at the time and for long after. The match and build were epic, but the buyrate was not great and the exchange rate hurt the live gate a lot. Face v Face just doesn't work as a major drawing card because then fans have to choose and someone ends up getting their heat scooped.
