WWF Wrestling Challenge – February 20th, 1994

By Brian Bayless on July 21, 2019

February 20, 1994

From the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, MA

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Stan Lane

This week’s featured match is Earthquake vs. Bastion Booger. Also in action are The Quebecers, Razor Ramon, Bam Bam Bigelow, and IRS. Plus an interview with Bret Hart and more!

The Quebecers vs. Tim McNeany & Phil Apollo

The announcers talk about The Quebecers title match on RAW this Monday night against Marty Jannetty & Razor Ramon. Apollo takes control early but Jacques boots him in the gut. The Quebecers hit some double-team moves then we hear from Men on a Mission with Oscar as they talk about beating the Quebecers for the titles at WrestleMania. The Quebecers stay in control then use the Boston Crab/flying leg drop combo for the win (3:17). The Quebecers then run McNeany off before celebrating.

Thoughts: They hyped up both The Quebecers title match this coming Monday on RAW and at WrestleMania. The Quebecers did a lot of cool double-team stuff here.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This focuses on the Bret vs. Owen Hart match at WrestleMania with Lord Alfred heeling on Bret and going on about his enormous ego. We then hear from the “sacrificial lamb” Owen as he says he’ll show the whole world how he’s the better wrestler and athlete than his brother Bret. This promo was different as we saw clips of Owen in action on the left side while Owen’s theme music played throughout the entirety of the interview. The interview itself was solid.

Razor Ramon vs. Brooklyn Brawler

Razor works over the arm of Brawler as we hear from Shawn Michaels in an insert promo as he promises to become the Intercontinental Champion at WrestleMania. The announcers talk about Shawn referring to himself as the wrestler of the 90’s as Brawler rakes the eyes and hammers away. However, Brawler ducks his head then Razor hits the Razor’s Edge for the win (1:48).

Thoughts: Easy win for Razor as they build up his title match at WrestleMania.

We get a video hyping next week’s Owen Hart vs. Bart Gunn match.

Bam Bam Bigelow w/ Luna Vachon vs. Dan Dubiel

The announcers talk about Bigelow & Luna facing Doink & Dink at WrestleMania and how that match is unique. Bigelow folds Dubiel in half with a back suplex then follows that with a dropkick after an Irish whip sequence. Bigelow then slams Dubiel as Luna yells at the fans then Bigelow heads up top for the flying headbutt and the win (1:15).

Thoughts: Bigelow looked impressive as they announcers questioned if Doink & Dink were strong enough to compete with these two at WrestleMania.

The announcers plug the new “Posters 9” magazine.

Raymond Rougeau welcomes Bret Hart into the ring for an interview. Bret talks about how at WrestleMania that he wants to face an honorable opponent for the title in Lex Luger but if they face off their friendship will be thrown out of the window. Raymond then asks Bret about Owen kicking out his leg in their match at the Royal Rumble. Bret does not really care to talk about this and says he tried to avoid this conflict at all costs. Bret then talks about the difficulty of facing his brother and how he has nothing to gain and that it will further tear his family apart before addressing Owen. Bret said he taught Owen to ride a bike and how he saved him from four kids in a fight at school but now regrets teaching him how to be a wrestler. Bret now says he does not want this but that Owen can bring his “cold heart” and jealously and how he will not show mercy and deal with him like any other opponent. Bret closes by saying “you wanted the big fight, you got the big fight.” The story between Bret and Owen has been fantastic and helps that they are not the best promo guys in the company. When the story is this good you don’t need to be great on the mic to get the point across.

IRS vs. John Paul

As IRS comes down the aisle and yells at the fans for being tax cheats as part of his incredibly stale shtick, he gets yelled at by Nikolai Volkoff who is once again sitting in the crowd. IRS adjusts his tie after hitting a slam then the announcers talk about the Bret/Owen match at WrestleMania. Paul comes back with a slam and a hip toss but eats boot on a charge in the corner. IRS now works the leg then hits a butterfly suplex for the win (1:35).

Thoughts: IRS is finishing off his house show matches against Razor, which were plugged here by the announcers, but with Volkoff appearing once again it seems like he is definitely returning to the company.

We get the Little Richard video hyping up his WrestleMania appearance.

WrestleMania X Report with Todd Pettengill.

Bastion Booger vs. Earthquake

Gorilla & Lane talk about Burt Reynolds being the WrestleMania X special guest ring announcer. Earthquake shoves Booger a few times after they lock up then we hear from Earthquake in an insert promo talking about how he is glad to be back in the WWF then calls out Ludvig Borga for their match at WrestleMania. Earthquake stays in control until missing an attack in the corner. Booger drops Earthquake with a clothesline then hits a pair of leg drops and follows with a splash but that only gets two. Earthquake now fires away and follows with a corner splash then hits a powerslam, setting up for the sit-down splash and the win (2:58) *.

Thoughts: The match was fine for the time they were allowed. Earthquake could still go but him as a smiling babyface is the shits. And it just feels so odd.

Final Thoughts: The Bret interview was good and the best thing on the show. Another thing to note was how during the match the hard camera view was of the entrance. The actual entrances were shown as they normally were on TV but it was odd not seeing the crowd in front of the ring. We get another featured match for next week as we are now just one month away from WrestleMania X.
