Independence Day Inspired Question

So its been pretty heavily stated how Lex Luger (sorry about referencing Lex) losing his big built up match at SummerSlam '93 to Yoko killed his main event run. My question is how much of said killing of his momentum was due not to the loss, but him & all the babyfaces celebrating like crazy as if he was the champ?
If they wanted to do the count-out, they could've had him trying to get Yoko back in the ring before admitting defeat & taking the count-out. Or even show him with some disappointment to help build storyline purposes later, since that was his "one" chance.
I remember even as a new fan (I started in '93 due to Bret/Steiners), I understood the basic rules enough to know that he didn't win the belt there & never lost the feeling that he was an idiot for celebrating so heavy…
Yes, definitely that was one of the things that made him look stupid. I believe the reasoning was that Vince wanted to make sure there was a "happy ending" and people didn't feel screwed after weeks of essentially promising that Luger would win the title, but yeah, it killed him but good.
