Flair and a broom
By Scott Keith on July 3, 2019
Hi Scott,
Hope all is well, bit of a question for you and the readers:
Ric Flair is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, the legend is always told that he could take a broom to a 3 star match. He’s the travelling champ that would take a local territory chump and make them look amazing in 60 minute draws night after night.
People always mention classic matches against Steamboat, Dusty, Savage, Sting etc but are there examples of Flair having a “hidden gem” with a Tom Magee equivalent? Not including the breakthrough Sting match. I’m sure there’s hundreds of non recorded matches, but are there some good examples of Flair dragging a good match out of some green shlub?
Oh yeah dude, he used to work MIRACLES with the Von Erichs when they were all pilled up or whatever, for example, and made Kerry look like a million bucks years before he was legitimately good in the ring and/or a real star. Best example was against someone like Butch Reed, where I believe there's early 80s footage out there still, where it's literally Butch standing there and Flair bouncing off him for 15 minutes and still making it a great match because Flair knew Reed could do press slams and a couple of other things, and he was able to work a match around that. Also, LEX LUGER. Watch Battle of the Belts III or whichever one it was, and see Flair just masterfully building an entire match around this doofus.
Hot take, Flair is great.
