WWF Superstars – December 25th, 1993
By Brian Bayless on June 30, 2019
December 25, 1993
From the Utica War Memorial in Utica, NY
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Stan Lane.
The show starts off with the announcers breaking the news of Bret & Owen Hart facing The Quebecers then they turn to the video wall and interview the Harts as Bret said they resolved their differences after a sit-down and promises to win the Tag Team Titles as a unit. Owen then says he said things he shouldn’t have and it doesn’t matter if they were true because 1994 is going to be a memorable year for them.
This week, we will see the full match from RAW between Ludvig Borga and Tatanka. Also in action are Doink the Clown, Shawn Michaels, Men on a Mission, and IRS.
Shawn Michaels vs. Phil Apollo
Once again before the match, Shawn tells the crowd that he is the undisputed Intercontinental Champion. Shawn takes control early as the announcers talk about his arrogance. Vince says that Apollo was a power lifter in the Air Force as Shawn now works the arm. Vince says we will find out nine more names for the Royal Rumble match then says that Shawn is probably not happy over IRS getting a Intercontinental Title shot at the PPV. Apollo elbows out then runs wild for a bit until ducking his head for a back drop and getting dropped with a side Russian leg sweep. Shawn then follows with a super kick and adjusts his knee pad before using a flying fist drop for the win (3:00).
Thoughts: They’re continuing the story of Shawn calling himself the undisputed Intercontinental Champion and as being pissed off over IRS receiving the match against Razor Ramon at the Royal Rumble.
We get a video highlight package hyping up a Lex Luger vs. Jacques match for next week’s show.
Men on a Mission w/ Oscar vs. Iron Mike Sharpe & Mike Bell
Sharpe bounces off of Mabel then gets pissed so he tries it again and is caught in a drop toe hold. Sharpe now tries a test-of-strength as Vince says WWF President Jack Tunney is still mulling whether or not to allow Lex Luger into the Royal Rumble match then hypes up the vote line. MoM stays in control as they now work over Bell then use an Irish whip/spinning heel kick combo for the win (2:56).
Thoughts: Again, Mabel is the only part of the MoM act that is focused on as he is being pushed as a Royal Rumble favorite due to his size.
Lane sings some Christmas songs in lame fashion as a corny newscaster as the announcers then cut to the Borga vs. Tatanka match from RAW. We then go back to the announcers as we learn of President Tunney making Borga vs. Tatanka official for the Royal Rumble. That is two undercard matches for the PPV announced on the show. However, this match would never take place as we will learn later on in this timeline.
Now, we get a video package hyping a Johnny Polo vs. Marty Jannetty for “Monday Night RAW.” Vince says that Polo is an “accomplished wrestler.”
Adam Bomb w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Brian Walsh
Bomb calls himself the “Dean of Destruction” before saying that “class is in” as his catchphrases are still terrible. Bomb destroys Walsh with a chokeslam as Vince says The Quebecers will be guest commentators this week on RAW. Walsh fights back and drops Bomb to one knee with a dropkick but gets slammed coming off of the top rope then Bomb uses the Atom Smasher for the win (2:41).
Thoughts: Interesting to hear the Quebecers are being guest announcers on the same show their manager was announced wrestling on as it now appears obvious an angle is taking place.
We now see a video package for a newcomer named “Kwang.” He is jumping around and doing martial arts poses as we get these dumb sound effects. He is Savio Vega under a mask as a ninja. According to his shoot interview with RF Video, Kwang said that Razor Ramon got him a tryout due to the fact they wrestled each other in Puerto Rico. The tryout was in Syracuse and he did not hear back after a few months so he called Pat Patterson because he was waiting at home then was eventually called back and introduced to the gimmick.
This week’s guest ring announcer is a kid named David Vaughn.
Doink the Clown w/ Dink vs. Reno Riggins
Vince laughs way too much at Doink wheeling out Dink on a Santa decorated shopping cart. Doink hugs Vaughn before giving him a gift. Lane adds that Riggins was a roller skating champion at age 14 as Doink works the arm. Dink is “having fun” on the apron according to Vince as Riggins catches Doink with a dropkick. Vince talks about the Doink/Bigelow feud as Riggins hits a handspring elbow in the corner but Doink comes back with a German suplex then uses a flying sit-down splash for the win (2:53).
Thoughts: The Dink stuff continues to be awful as Doink/Bigelow continues as a feud.
Royal Rumble Report with Todd Pettengill. Announced for the Royal Rumble Match this week are: Adam Bomb, Bam Bam Bigelow, Randy Savage, 1-2-3 Kid, Fatu, Samu, Rick Steiner, Bob Backlund, and Greg Valentine who is billed as returning. However, it was just a one-shot deal. This also had Pettengill interview Jim Cornette over the phone as Cornette keeps talking about Paul Bearer & Tunney conspiring to get the belt off of Yokozuna by tampering with the contract. Cornette also takes umbrage over being blamed for this happening to his client.
IRS vs. Ralph Mosca
IRS attacks Mosca before the bell then tosses him outside. IRS follows out then tries to send Mosca into the post but it gets reversed. Mosca heads inside and shakes IRS’s briefcase and tries to figure out hte combination of the lock but IRS attacks from behind as the match is officially underway. IRS puts on an abdominal stretch then hits a clothesline and a butterfly suplex for the win (1:02). Vince hypes up IRS as possibly defeating Razor Ramon for the Intercontinental Title at the PPV.
Thoughts: Interesting stuff with the briefcase as they get heat on the Intercontinental Title match at the Rumble with the angle of IRS possessing Razor’s chain.
Next week in action are Ludvig Borga, Owen Hart, and the featured match of Lex Luger vs. Jacques Rougeau. Plus, an interview with Razor Ramon. The show closes with interviews from all involved in next week’s featured match.
Final Thoughts: We saw Bret & Owen seemingly make up and learned of two new matches announced for the PPV along with nine more entrants included in the Royal Rumble match in the final episode of “Superstars” for 1993. But don’t you worry, I’ll still recap them as we head into 1994.
