Turner Cancelling WCW Programs
By Scott Keith on June 19, 2019
When Turner cancelled WCW programming in 2001, was it really because they "wanted to get out of the "rasslin business" into scripted dramas, or was that just their cover story excuse? "Rasslin business" or not, that seemed kind of hasty to just throw away programs that were drawing millions of viewers a week for their network, even at that time in cable television.
Not sure where the conspiracy is coming from, my man. The reasoning here was pretty transparent. TBS/TNT wanted to get into scripted programming because those kinds of shows made money from ads and wrestling didn't. Plus TBS owned WCW and WCW was losing them $60 million a year with no prospects of turning that around any time soon. Hell, they had tried to unload the company multiple times through the 90s and got blocked by Ted Turner every time, so it's not like this was even some crazy new plan on their part.
