WWF Superstars of Wrestling – October 9th, 1993

By Brian Bayless on June 1, 2019

October 9, 1993

From the Welsh Civic Auditorium in Grand Rapids, MI

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and Jerry “The King” Lawler.

This week in action are The Undertaker, Adam Bomb, Men on a Mission, and Mr. Perfect. Plus, an interview with Bam Bam Bigelow & Luna Vachon and more!

Men on a Mission w/ Oscar vs. Damien Demento & Anthony Green

Savage once again refers to Lawler as “buckethead” as Vince puts over Mabel’s performance in the Intercontinental Title battle royal. Why, I have no idea, seeing that Mabel was the second person eliminated. Demento and Mo slug it out as Lawler rags on Savage for getting eliminated in the battle royal then Mo hits a suplex. Vince plugs Razor Ramon vs. Rick Martel for the Intercontinental Title this coming Monday on RAW as Mabel works the arm of Green. Mabel then hits a clothesline as MoM stay in control as we now hear a “womp, there it is” and put Green away with a Rocket Launcher (3:36).

Thoughts: Really just a backdrop for the announcers to talk about the battle royal and upcoming Intercontinental Title match on RAW. MoM is clearly just an opening act to please the crowd, much like the Bushwhackers.

WWF Update with Gorilla Monsoon. This week’s focus is on the Bret Hart/Jerry Lawler feud. We then hear from Bret as hearing Lawler called the undisputed king of the WWF makes him sick and almost ended his career with the Sharpshooter and if they step into the ring again he’ll end his career. Solid promo from Bret here as this feud has remained hot.

We go back to the announcers as Lawler is laughing and says he checked the background of the Hart Family and that they were some of the original settlers of America but moved to Canada at the first site of war due to being cowards. Lawler has even more ammunition to keep this feud going.

Mitch Bishop vs. Adam Bomb w/ Johnny Polo

Lawler says he has research to prove the Hart Family are cowards as the announcers make jokes about bathhouses due to Polo’s attire. Bomb beats the crap out of Bishop as the announcers talk about The Quebecers being champions. Bomb knocks Bishop through the ropes with a standing dropkick as Polo snaps his towel. Bomb then slingshots back into the ring with a clothesline for the win (1:42). After the match, Bomb hits Bishop with the Atom Smasher.

Thoughts: This ended up being Bomb’s final appearance with Polo and for good reason as they had zero chemistry together. We will see who manages Bomb this coming Monday night on RAW.

Vince shills the newest edition of “WWF Magazine” that has an article on Adam Bomb. Seems like Bomb will be getting at least a midcard push now.

We see a package on the RAW battle royal narrated by Jim Ross to hype this coming Monday’s Intercontinental Title match.

Mr. Perfect vs. Red Tyler

Lawler calls Perfect “Mr. Mediocre.” The announcers continue to hype the Intercontinental Title match as Perfect dropkicks Tyler after an Irish whip sequence. Perfect chops Tyler a few times on the outside as Vince brings up Perfect eliminating Diesel in the battle royal. Tyler lands some shots in the corner, including a discus punch, but eats boot on a charge. Perfect fires away as Lawler plugs Perfect as his guest this week on the “King’s Court.” Perfect stays in control then hits the Perfect Plex for the win (2:40). Vince then says Perfect is on his way to the Survivor Series.

Thoughts: Mainly just a segment to hype up Perfect appearing on King’s Court with Lawler hurling some insults to build heat for the appearance.

An ad for the Survivor Series airs.

Boni Blackstone brings Bam Bam Bigelow & Luna Vachon to the interview platform. Bigelow says that Lawler was right in saying Doink the Clown was an imbecile. We see a clip of Luna getting doused with water as Bigelow says Doink will pay for that and everything else he did and after he’s done will wish “he’s back in the circus on top of a tight rope.” I thought this interview made Bigelow look dumb. It came off as fake and scripted like the promos of today.

Another plug for the “Grudges, Gripes, and Grunts” Coliseum Home Video release.

Well Dunn w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Virgil & Jerry Fox

Lawler refers to Whippleman as a “genius” as Vince notes that we had a genius in the WWF before. Funny reference to a former talent. Dunn and Virgil keep reversing hip toss attempts until Virgil sends Dunn over the top rope. Virgil works a side headlock until Dunn backs him into the corner. Virgil catches Dunn with a back drop then works the arm before tagging out. Fox uses a side headlock takeover but gets caught with a back suplex. Well Dunn work over Fox in the corner as the announcers ask Savage about his problems with Crush. Well Dunn stay in control then pin Fox after Dunn hits a diving forearm smash (3:32).

Thoughts: Well Dunn are a bottom level team still and even with a manager there appears to be zero plans to make them a pushed act.

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Rod Bell

Undertaker beats on Bell as the announcers put over the upcoming Undertaker vs. Yokozuna matches. Undertaker then hits a chokeslam and covers for the win (1:52). After the match, Lawler uses his Royal Magistrator to draw Yokozuna coming down on the urn with a bonzai splash.

Thoughts: An easy win for The Undertaker, who got the best reaction of the show by a wide margin, to hype him for upcoming matches against Yokozuna.

We get some still photos of Hulk Hogan in Mr. Nanny. At this point, Hogan is still in the video opening of the show.

An ad hyping the Royal Rumble video games, which is coming soon to Sega Genesis.

The “WWF Unbelievable” ad airs where the President delays takeoff on Air Force One in order to watch RAW.

Headshrinkers w/ Afa vs. Steve Nixon & Tony Bazera

I have no idea which enhancement talent is who. The Headshrinkers beat the crap out of their opponents as Lawler makes fun of Stu & Helen Hart for being old. Lawler continues to make fun of them as Vince says the entire Hart family is after him, which causes Lawler to laugh. The Headshrinkers stay in control then Fatu hits a flying splash for the win (3:00).

Thoughts: This segment was all about Lawler dissing Bret’s parents to build more heat for that feud.

Next week, the two Survivor Series main events will be announced. In action are The Quebecers, Ludvig Borga, and 1-2-3 Kid vs. Pat Tanaka. Savage noted that Tanaka is a “friend” of Mr. Fuji. We then hear from Rick Martel and Razor Ramon to hype their match on RAW as we will see highlights of this on next week’s show.

Final Thoughts: Most of the show was hyping up the Intercontinental Title match on RAW. They also heated up the Bret/Lawler feud and are making Doink/Bigelow into one of the top TV feuds as next week we start the build towards the Survivor Series PPV.
