WWF Wrestling Challenge – October 3rd, 1993

By Brian Bayless on May 30, 2019

October 3, 1993

From the Saginaw Civic Center in Saginaw, MI

Your hosts are Jim Ross and Bobby Heenan as they talk about the Tag Team Title picture.

Mr. Perfect vs. Brian Costello

Perfect works over Costello as the announcers put him over as a possibility to become the next Intercontinental Champion. Costello hammers away then heads up top but gets slammed off as Perfect follows with a knee lift. Heenan all of sudden realizes that Perfect could become a three-time Intercontinental Champion as Perfect uses a Perfect Plex for the win (3:12).

Thoughts: They tried to put over Perfect as a possible battle royal winner to push him as the first 3-time Intercontinental Champion but Perfect’s value as a babyface has taken a significant hit during since the Summer.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This is about the Intercontinental Title situation and the same segment we saw during the Update segment on “Superstars.”

The Headshrinkers w/ Afa vs. Virgil & Red Tyler

Fatu attacks Virgil from behind to start. Virgil floats over in the corner and fires away then comes off the middle rope with a flying chop on Samu. The Headshrinkers then no-sell a double noggin-knocker and hit Virgil with a double punch as Tyler now tags into the match. The Headshrinkers beat on Tyler but are then hit with a double clothesline. Tyler heads up top but is caught in midair then bailed out as Virgil comes off the middle rope with a dropkick for a two count. The Headshrinkers then destroy Virgil with a double thrust kick as Virgil appears knocked out with the ref rolling him near his corner. Tyler is back inside and roughed up by Fatu in the corner. The Headshrinkers stay in control as Ross says there are a lot of teams trying to get into the title picture but Ross believes The Steiners will retain the belts. Virgil is still out on the mat and The Headshrinkers continue to destroy Tyler until he is put away with a splash from Fatu (4:52).

Thoughts: Long squash match with Ross still pushing the Steiners as reclaiming the Tag Team Titles. They also talked about the Tag Team division which has a lot of teams but little focus.

We get another “WWF Unbelievable” ad with RAW being heard from Air Force One.

1-2-3 Kid vs. Tom Stone

Kid hits a few kicks on Stone before working a chinlock. The announcers talk about the Battle Royal as Stone hits a backbreaker. Stone works over Kid and gets a nearfall in the process as Kid comes back with a sunset flip for a two count. Stone then dumps Kid outside as the announcers talk about “Radio WWF.” Stone hits a suplex for a two count but runs into a spinning heel kick then Kid hits another kick in the corner before using a moonsault block for the win (3:17).

Thoughts: Kid sold a lot in this match and Heenan talked about him possibly winning the battle royal due to the anything can happen aspect or that he’d get eliminated soon due to all the super heavyweights involved.

Ross plugs the “Superstars VIII” magazine with The Undertaker on the cover.

King’s Court with guest Ludvig Borga. Lawler does not understand why the fans do not accept Borga then insults the fans for not standing up during Finland’s National Anthem. Borga says he does not have respect for Lex Luger or his friends & family. Borga also does not have any respect for this country. Borga is then asked about what he will do to Luger in the ring as Borga compares Luger to the polluted rivers and terrible schools of America. Borga then says if Luger is the backbone of America then he will break it as Lawler demands the crowd stand up and salute Borga. Lawler tried to get Borga some heat but that was an impossible task.

We get an ad for the “Grudges, Gripes, and Grunts” Coliseum Home Video release, which will be out this coming Wednesday.

Adam Bomb w/ Johnny Polo vs. Todd Becker

Heenan makes a joke by calling a young red-headed kid in the crowd “Conan O’Brien.” Heenan once again talks up Polo for managing the Tag champs and hosting Radio WWF. Ross puts over the WWF International tour as Bomb tosses Becker into the corner and kicks away. Polo then laughs after saying “life, liberty, and the pursuit of pain” as Ross mentions that Arnold Skaaland said that Polo reminds him of a young Heenan with Heenan joking that Skaaland is 200 years old. Bomb stays in control then puts Becker away with the Atom Smasher as Ross mentions that Polo has Bomb signed up for some tag team matches (2:13).

Thoughts: They continue to push Polo more than they do Bomb, which is usually a sign of a turn. We will see what happens with them soon enough though.

We are shown the Undertaker/Yokozuna confrontation that took place last week on “Superstars”

Mitch Bishop & Kevin Kruger vs. Well Dunn w/ Harvey Whippleman

This is Whippleman’s debut as the manager of Well Dunn. Ross talks about seeing a memo from Jack Tunney that had a Well Dunn vs. Men on a Mission match as Heenan jokes that Ross pulled a “Watergate” on Tunney. Dunn beats on Kruger to start. Kruger gets a hip toss but walks into a clothesline. Dunn then hits a standing dropkick as the announcers now talk about Undertaker vs. Yokozuna then the dynamic between Crush and Randy Savage. Well Dunn stays in control before offering each other the chance to make the pin on Kruger and Well finally accepts and gets the win (2:53).

Thoughts: Whippleman is all of a sudden the new manager of Well Dunn but did nothing at all during this match and we have no idea why he is the manager of this team. And the focus on commentary was on other feuds going on in the promotion since Well Dunn is at the bottom of the tag ranks and a feud with Men on a Mission will not change their status.

We get the trailer for the film “Mr. Nanny.”

Razor Ramon vs. Rock Werner

Razor chops Werner in the corner before tossing him across the ring. Ross puts over Razor as a favorite to win the battle royal as Razor hits a super belly-to-back suplex then the Razor’s Edge for the win (1:05).

Thoughts: A quick win Razor who is being pushed as a favorite to become the next Intercontinental Champion.

Next week in action are the Smoking Gunns, IRS, Tatanka, Bastion Booger, Marty Jannetty, and Ludvig Borga. Plus, Mr. Perfect as guest on the “King’s Court.”

Final Thoughts: Much like we saw on “Superstars,” the focus here was on hyping the RAW battle royal. The other news was the earth-shattering revelation that Harvey Whippleman now manages Well Dunn. And with Mr. Hughes & Giant Gonzalez done with the company by the time this aired I guess he needed someone to manage.
