WWF Superstars – October 2nd, 1993
By Brian Bayless on May 30, 2019
October 2, 1993
From the Welsh Civic Auditorium in Grand Rapids, MI
Your hosts are Vince McMahon, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and Jerry “The King” Lawler
We are shown clips from Doink the Clown on “King’s Court” last week during “Wrestling Challenge” where Doink dumped a bucket of water over Lawler’s head before cutting to the announcers as Lawler is not too pleased.
This week in action are Doink the Clown, IRS, Marty Jannetty, Steiner Brothers, and Ludvig Borga.
Steiner Brothers vs. Chad Miller & Tom Bennett
Scott works over Miller as the announcers talk about the Tag Team Title match from “Monday Night RAW.” Bennett now tags and The Steiners work him over as Savage taunts Lawler by calling him “bucket head.” Lawler says someone will pay for his crown getting ruined as Rick rams Bennett into the corner. The Steiners stay in control until they put Miller away with a Doomsday Bulldog (3:46). After the match, Lawler uses his “Royal Magistrator “to draw suspenders on Scott because he no longer has a belt to hold up his pants then draws a clown face on Rick because he’s just like Doink.
Thoughts: Most of this segment was to get over the “bucket head” nickname for Lawler, which was a theme of the show. They also teased The Steiners of once again becoming the Tag Team Champions but that did not end up being the case.
WWF Update with Gorilla Monsoon. This is on the Intercontinental Title being vacated due to Shawn Michaels refusing to fulfill contractual obligations, setting up a battle royal this coming Monday night on RAW where the last two men in the ring will face off the following week to crown a new champion. The participants include: IRS, Randy Savage, Adam Bomb, Giant Gonzalez, Mr. Perfect, Owen Hart, Rick Martel, Jimmy Snuka, Bob Backlund, Pierre, Jacques, Razor Ramon, Mabel, Diesel, MVP, 1-2-3 Kid, Bam Bam Bigelow, Marty Jannetty, Tatanka, and Bastion Booger.
Ludvig Borga vs. Sonny Rogers
Savage says he will become the Intercontinental Champion as Borga attacks Rogers before the bell. Borga drops Rogers with a lifting choke hold then goes back to hammering away. Lawler says that Borga will be his guest on the “King’s Court” this week as Borga hits Rogers with a delayed vertical suplex. Borga’s head is now busted open then he misses a splash in the corner. Rogers tries a dropkick and clothesline that have little effect before getting caught with a powerslam then Borga uses the torture rack for the win (3:03). After the match, Lawler draws another clown face this time on Rogers to show how he is a loser just like Doink.
Thoughts: They continue to put Borga on TV weekly in an attempt to get him over but its not working due to the fact Borga is not any good in his role.
Gary Jackson vs. IRS
On his way to the ring, IRS calls out the crowd for being tax cheats as part of his stale act. IRS rams Jackson into the corner but whiffs on a clothesline as Jackson hits a crossbody for two. IRS then tosses Jackson outside as Vince puts over WWF appearing this coming Thursday in Israel for the first time. IRS now works the leg as Lawler is still salty over what Doink did to him with Vince talking about the IRS/Razor Ramon feud. IRS stays in control then puts Jackson away with the Write Off clothesline (2:44).
Thoughts: They pushed the IRS/Razor feud as a technician vs. brawler here and I did like how Jackson got some shine to tease another upset loss for IRS. However, the IRS gimmick itself is just awful now and completely out of steam.
We now see The Undertaker digging a grave. He says if you are using drugs then you are in fact digging your on grave and closes by saying “there’s no hope with dope.”
Bam Bam Bigelow w/ Luna Vachon vs. Rod Bell
Bigelow beats down Bell as Luna screams on the outside. Vince now asks Savage about his problems with Crush as Savage says Crush refuses to respond when reached out. Vince tries to dig deeper but Savage says he has no idea and wants Crush to come clean. Bigelow drops Bell with an enziguiri as Lawler accuses Savage of lying then Bigelow hits a flying headbutt for the win (1:42).
Thoughts: On commentary they pushed the Crush/Savage storyline with Savage still having no idea why Crush is upset. Bigelow was not mentioned much during this match but that would change after the break.
We return from break with Doink the Clown coming out for his match while Bigelow & Luna are standing in the aisle. Doink has a pail and threatens to throw it at Bigelow. Doink then tosses the pail and it turns out to be confetti as Bigelow threatens to “rip his head off” if he tries it again. Luna then screams at Doink but Doink takes the other pail and dumps it on her head as that turned out to be water. Luna is freaking out as Bigelow goes to the ring after Doink. Luna follows as Doink is laughing at both of them from the outside. Doink then trips up Bigelow and has Bigelow chase him around the ring before crawling underneath the ring. Bigelow tries to go after him but unable to crawl underneath then Bigelow beats the crap out of the enhancement talent that tried to console Luna. Doink is now shown tying a wire on the guardrails. Doink then sneaks in and whacks Bigelow with a broom. Bigelow then chases after Doink but gets caught with the trip wire as Doink is laughing. They’ve now given Doink a feud with Bigelow too along with Lawler. In his shoot interview with RF Video, Doink said that he had issues with Bigelow and that Bigelow did not want to put him over. This segment sure did make Bigelow look like a moron though.
Marty Jannetty vs. Steve Moore
Once again, Moore is the future Al Snow. And future Leif Cassidy, who in less than three years would become Marty’s partner in the New Rockers. Marty works over Moore as the announcers talk about the Doink/Bigelow segment. Lawler says that Doink took “coward” lessons from Bret Hart as Moore catches Marty with a right hand. Moore then catches Marty with a backbreaker and stops away as Vince talks about Marty being a former Intercontinental champion. Moore targets the back and hits a Saito suplex for two but Marty blocks a suplex attempt and hits a knee lift. Marty then follows with a jumping back elbow smash and a suplex but Moore rakes the eyes. Marty then fights back and puts Moore away with a Rocker Dropper (3:19).
Thoughts: Fun match with Moore given a surprising amount of offense considering he was an unknown name as far as WWF enhancement talent was concerned. And this was still several months before he became a commodity on the Independent scene. This was not a ringing endorsement for Marty’s chances in the Battle Royal this Monday night though.
We are now shown a trailer for Hulk Hogan’s newest film, “Mr. Nanny.”
The “WWF Unbelievable” ad with the baby smiling and laughing when turning on WWF TV airs.
Heavenly Bodies w/ Jim Cornette vs. Reno Riggins & John Paul
Lawler talks about the beauty of Tennesse, where Smoky Mountain is from, but is met with “bucket head” insults that get Vince laughing like an idiot. Riggins takes Del Ray down with a hip toss then almost puts him away with a small package after a nice reversal sequence. Paul and Prichard are in now with Prichard side-stepping a dropkick. The Bodies work over Paul as Lawler is now upset with Jim Ross not referring to him as the Undisputed King on “Radio WWF.” Riggins tags in and runs wild on Prichard but gets drilled with a super kick from Del Ray after a blind tag then Del Ray puts Paul away with a moonsault (3:39).
Thoughts: Another fun match here with Riggins looking good in the ring. However, the match was just a backdrop for the announcers to plug other happenings in the company.
Next week in action are The Undertaker, Adam Bomb, Men on a Mission, and Mr. Perfect. Plus, an interview with Bam Bam Bigelow & Luna Vachon.
Final Thoughts: They hyped up the Intercontinental Title battle royal for RAW throughout the show and ragged on Lawler for getting water dumped on him by Doink. Also, they kicked off the Doink/Bigelow feud here as once again Superstars main goal was to promote what was happening on RAW as the transition to make RAW the top show continues.
