WWF Mania – October 2nd, 1993

October 2, 1993

Todd Pettengill is your host as Randy Savage is on assignment to interview Lex Luger.

We are shown Jack Tunney’s announcement that the WWF Intercontinental Title has been vacated due to Shawn Michaels failure to show up to his commitments. And, a battle royal on RAW next week will take place with the last two men facing off the following week to crown the new champion.

Savage is shown on a baseball field to tell us that he will be interviewing Luger. He wants Pettengill to hold the fort down and puts over the interview. Pettengill is then shown back in the studio wearing a Savage hat and glasses.

The Undertaker defeats Steve Moore from the 9/26 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.”

Pettengill now talks about the WWF Tag Team Title situation and how The Quebecers won using “Quebec Province Rules” then refused to give a rematch to the Steiners even after Scott defeated Pierre. We are then joined in progress from the 9/27 edition of “RAW”where The Quebecers defeated Barry Horowitz & 1-2-3 Kid.

Adam Bomb defeats Kevin Kruger from the 9/25 edition of “Superstars.”

We then get a message narrated by Howard Finkel apologizing to a certain “network” for cutting into their first hour TV ratings and asks them to reschedule their kickoff time.

Pettengill does a shout out to his grandfather by doing a shitty impression of Rodney Dangerfield.

Rick Martel and Tatanka wrestle to a double count-out from the 9/27 edition of “Monday Night RAW.”

Pettengill runs down the competitors of the battle royal this coming Monday night on RAW.

Ludvig Borga defeats Rod Bell from the 9/26 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.”

We now see the Luger interview that takes place on some random baseball field. Savage asks Luger about Borga as Luger said he is strong and has a big mouth. Luger also does not see any weaknesses. Savage then asks Luger how he feels in his heart about Borga trashing America as Luger believes Borga needs an attitude adjustment. Luger then says its bad for America and Borga is here to take advantage of the free enterprise system. Savage puts over Luger for being a leader as Luger says talk is cheap and that actions speak louder than words as he calls out Borga. Luger then says he has never felt better about his career direction and deep down in his heart knows he can become the WWF World Heavyweight Champion. This was a horrendous performance by Luger here. He did not show any conviction in what he was saying and whenever people complained about him not believable in his role this should be their shining example. Dude was checked out of this gimmick and certainly not thrilled to feud with Borga. And I imagine the company knew this was shit too as they stuck it on this show and never aired it anywhere else on syndication despite involving the guy they have been pushing down our throats all Summer long. Plus, we’ve barely heard from Luger since SummerSlam.

Pettengill mocks PJ Walker for beating IRS two weeks ago on RAW.

Razor Ramon defeats Brian Costello from the 9/25 edition of “Superstars.”

Pettengill then wishes Savage good luck at the battle royal. Savage is then shown on the field crossing home plate then predicts he will become the next Intercontinental Champion before putting over his interview with Luger. Savage ends by saying he’ll hit a home run on RAW. A corny promo but at least they are stressing this battle royal as a reason to watch RAW.

Final Thoughts: The only thing exclusive here was the Luger interview and it stunk. At this point, Mania stopped airing exclusive matches and opted for exclusive interviews instead. Pettengill can suck at times but compared to Joe Fowler he’s brilliant. Anyway, we continue with the top feuds being Yokozuna/Undertaker, Bret/Lawler, and Luger/Borga.
