Layeth The Smacketh Down (eth?)

By Scott Keith on May 27, 2019

Hi Scott.

Been reading you recent posts about wrestling video games and I got thinking about the original Smackdown games on the PS1.

When the first one was released, it was awesome. Played it to death. It was one of those game that was easy to play but hard to put down. Great.

Then Smackdown 2 was announced with all it's new features. Excellent I thought, couldn't wait. Got a copy, got home and played it and it all these extra options and match types but………………the loading times. They were horrible. Smackdown 1 you could pretty much press start and play, SD 2, you waited…and waited.

After a short while, I just put the first one back in and played that.

Very disappointed in Smackdown 3 (looked good, but way too short), but Here Comes The Pain was immense.

So, what are your thoughts on the original Smackdown games?

Also, to a completely different game, what are thoughts on WCW Mayhem on the PS1? A game that gets overlooked compared to other WCW Games, but I really liked it.

Cheers

Barry

Here Comes the Pain was AMAZING but it took me a long time to give up the N64 as my wrestling game system of choice. The Smackdown games certainly improved the presentation aspect and using Yukes engine from Touken Retsuden was the best they were gonna do if AKI was getting muscled out, but I just don’t have the long term fondness for the series. Probably because releasing games every year made them run too much together.
