Who will participate in a captain’s match? Can Kevin, David, and Parsons earn a title shot by defeating the Freebirds in a non-title match? Will Parsons get revenge against Roberts? Let’s hope tonight’s guest doesn’t brandish a .44 Magnum.
Opening montage.
Match 1: “Gentleman” Chris Adams versus Johnny Mantell
Highlights:
- While Mercer plugs the upcoming Star Wars card, Adams applied a cross arm breaker.
- Mantell then reversed an Irish whip and backdropped Adams.
- When Mantell slammed him, Adams rebounded with a leap frog and a monkey flip.
- He then hooked a flying headscissors, but Mantell countered with a belly-to-back suplex.
- As a mid-ring collision occurred, two minutes remained in the match.
- Adams then slammed Mantell and followed with a leg drop for 2.
- After Mantell hooked an inside cradle for 2, he attempted a slam.
- Unfortunately for Mantell, Adams fell atop him for 2.
- With thirty seconds left, Adams catapulted Mantell head-first into the top turnbuckle.
- Mantell rebounded with a somersault roll-up for 2.
- When Adams hooked a sunset flip, the bell rang.
- Referee Bronko Lubich ruled the bout a time-limit draw.
Rating: **
Summary: Decent scientific match with strong psychology.
We then revisit the Kevin-Flair match from 4/1. If you want the details, catch my reflection of the 4/9 episode here.
Prior to the main event, Parsons grabs the microphone, requests his participation in the match, and threatens to cut Roberts’ hair in retribution for last week’s fiasco.
Match 2 (captain): Buddy Roberts versus “Iceman” King Parsons
Highlights:
- If this match took place in Chicago…
- Fortunately, we’re not, so the Dallas faithful made their voices heard, and we get a rematch between Parsons and Roberts.
- As Parsons rang Roberts’ bell, Roberts mounted the second turnbuckle and delivered a flying stomp for a 1-count.
- Parsons rebounded with a butt butt and pinned Roberts.
Rating: *½
Summary: Quick revenge match for Parsons.
After the match, Roberts thwarts Parsons’ attempt at retrieving his barber tools. Next, he retrieves his own scissors, but Parsons head-butts him and gains control of the scissors. He then cuts a few locks of Roberts’ hair before Roberts hightails it.
Match 3 (non-title): WCCW Six-Man tag champions the Freebirds versus “Iceman” King Parsons, David & Kevin Von Erich
Highlights:
- As you’d expect, a pier-six brawl erupted to begin the match.
- When order was restored, Kevin rammed Gordy’s head directly into Parsons’ head and knocked him for a loop.
- Roberts tagged in, but Kevin applied a fireman’s carry and tagged in Parsons.
- As he backdropped Roberts, Parsons tagged in David.
- According to Mercer, the Texas title was held up.
- David then landed a high knee to Roberts for 2.
- After Roberts rebounded with a knee to the midsection, Hayes tagged in.
- Gordy tagged in and hit a back elbow to David.
- When David applied an Iron claw, Hayes came in only to get his own head clawed.
- He then used momentum to send David to the floor and tagged in Roberts.
- Shortly after, Gordy tagged in and delivered a swinging neckbreaker to David.
- Roberts tagged in, mounted the second turnbuckle, but ate a shot to the midsection.
- As Gordy tagged in, he prevented David from tagging out and hit a back elbow.
- A false tag occurred, and the Freebirds gave further business to David. How dastardly!
- After David blocked an atomic drop, he provided Gordy with one of his own.
- Hayes tagged in, and the Dallas faithful LOUDLY chanted for David.
- When Roberts tagged in, a mid-ring collision occurred.
- Hot tag Parsons.
- With all six wrestlers in the ring, Parsons backdropped Gordy.
- Gordy returned the favor to Parsons, and Roberts nailed Parsons from the apron during a roll-up attempt of Gordy.
- 1-2-3.
- The Freebirds won.
Rating: **
Summary: Sizzling hot main event where the Freebirds stole one from our heroes.
Conclusion: Despite Parsons’ getting revenge for Roberts’ misdeeds, the Freebirds stood tall in a solid main event. Quite explosive, no?
TV Rating: NONE
