WWF Superstars – August 21st, 1993

By Brian Bayless on April 17, 2019

August 21, 1993

From the Utica War Memorial in Utica, NY

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and Jerry “The King” Lawler.

The show starts off with a video of Jerry Lawler in a park promising to show how he is the real king of wrestling. We then see an Elvis Presley impersonator pull up in a pink cadillac tell us that Lawler is in fact the real king of wrestling then pulls away as Lawler tells Bret Hart he is going to “Heartbreak Hotel.” The Elvis stuff is hokey but Lawler being a dick about Bret winning King of the Ring (and about the tournament in general) has been the basis of the storyline.

Vince and Savage are in the announcers area, saying Lawler is not here, but Lawler does surprise them and appears.

This week in action are The Quebecers, Marty Jannetty, and Men on a Mission with Savage in the graphic.

Marty Jannetty vs. Barry Horowitz

We get a shoving match after a reversal sequence as Lawler tells us Ludvig Borga will make an example out of Marty at SummerSlam. We then hear from Borga in an insert promo telling Mary he will give him pain that will not go away. Marty drops Horowitz with a super kick then uses a flying fist drop for the win (1:49).

Thoughts: Hype for the Marty/Borga match at SummerSlam, with all the focus on Borga being an ass kicker as to make it clear who is going over.

The Face-to-Face segment is next but we see Raymond Rougeau taking Gene Okerlund’s place to hype up the Nassau Coliseum show. And boy did he suck in this role. Okerlund was back next week for this segment but would be leaving the company very soon.

The Quebecers vs. Dan Dubiel & Scott Despres

Jacques hits Dubiel with a short piledriver as Vince hypes up Rapping Randy later on in the show. Jacques then hits Dubiel with a waterwheel slam and puts on a Boston Crab as Pierre comes off the middle rope with a leg drop then Despres breaks up the tag. Despres is in as Pierre destroys him then they hit the old Rougeau Bomb before using an assisted senton for the win (2:13).

Thoughts: The Quebecers continue to impress in the ring as part of the retooled tag team division but mots of the focus was on Rapping Randy.

WWF Update with Gorilla Monsoon. We get another montage of the Lex Express tour then Gorilla talks about the stipulations for Luger/Yokozuna at SummerSlam then this segues into the “Who is Lex Luger” segment about college. Next, we hear from Jim Cornette with Yokozuna & Mr. Fuji by his side. Cornette tells Luger he can be around all of the people but at SummerSlam they will not help him against a monster like Yokozuna. Cornette then says the campaign will do nothing for Luger and all Yokozuna has on his mind is destroying Luger and keeping the title. Cornette’s promos with Yokozuna were certainly better than the ones that came from Fuji.

Adam Bomb w/ Johnny Polo vs. Mike Muraldo

Bomb is back to the “total destruction” stuff. Bomb rakes Muraldo’s eyes as Polo is sitting in a beach chair and sipping a drink at ringside. Bomb turns Muraldo inside out with a clothesline as Polo says hello to his friend Bobby Heenan. Muraldo gets tossed outside and gets a drink poured on him by Polo then Bomb brings Muraldo inside and hits a clothesline then an Atom Smasher for the win (2:18). Just before the match ended, Vince plugged Jim Ross hosting “WWF Live,” which is a radio show.

Thoughts: I thought Polo sitting in a beach chair and sipping a drink was funny but Bomb is still just squashing dudes and does not appear to have any direction.

We now have the premiere of Rapping Randy with Men on a Mission. Randy is of course of Randy Savage and this is a rap about Luger’s Call to Action campaign. And this literally sucks out loud.

Mr. Hughes w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Mike Bucci

Hughes destroys Bucci then catches him with a dropkick. We see another black wreath at ringside as Lawler acts like he has a phone call then leaves because there are girls all around the pink Cadillac and after that Hughes uses a sidewalk slam for the win (1:21). Vince then accuses Lawler of trying to set up Bret Hart for an attack as Bret’s interview is next. Hughes then destroys the wreath.

Thoughts: Hughes destroys another wreath but the goal was to make you think Lawler was plotting something against Bret.

Boni Blackstone welcomes Bret to the interview platform and introduces him as the king of the ring. She then asks Bret about Lawler not respecting his title as Bret talks about earning all of the titles he has ever had then we see clips of Lawler attacking Bret after King of the Ring, attacking Owen in their match, and harassing Bret’s parents. Bret says they are big boys but harassing his parents crossed a line and Lawler will pay for that at “The SummerSlam” then promises after the show, Lawler will respect the Hart name. Solid promo from Bret has he is fighting for his family name and to get revenge on Lawler for harassing his parents.

An ad for SummerSlam airs.

Bam Bam Bigelow w/ Luna Vachon vs. Bobby Who

Bigelow clotheslines Who as Luna yells at the crowd. Tatanka & Smoking Gunns are in an insert promo hyping up the six-man at SummerSlam then Bigelow hits a flying headbutt for the win (1:05). After the match, Lawler comes back to the booth and talks about all of the girls near the Cadillac while his colleagues call him out for being a liar.

Thoughts: Some hype for the SummerSlam six-man tag while Lawler returned and clearly did so to avoid being seen by Bret.

WWF SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund.

Men on a Mission w/ Oscar vs. Iron Mike Sharpe & Jeff Libolt

Mo and Sharpe mix it up as Lawler asks about Bret’s interview and says wants to see his entire family. Mabel tags in and Sharpe tries to slam him but that fails. Mabel slams Sharpe with one arm then takes him down with a spinning heel kick. Libolt tags in and gets beaten down then MoM put him away after Mo shoved Mabel on top of Libolt (2:08).

Thoughts: Its safe to assume that Bret’s family will be in attendance since Lawler mentioned that he wants them there for their match at SummerSlam.

The announcers run down the top matches for the “SummerSlam Spectacular” and promise highlights on next week’s show.

Final Thoughts: Most of the focus was on the Bret/Lawler feud while the rest of the show was hype for the PPV and SummerSlam Spectacular show this weekend.
