WWF Superstars – July 31st, 1993

By Brian Bayless on April 5, 2019

July 31, 1993

From the Wilkes University Marts Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and Jerry “The King” Lawler

The show opens with the end of Bret Hart vs. Bam Bam Bigelow from “Monday Night RAW” when Lawler was harassing Bret’s parents in the balcony then Bret left to confront him but Lawler was able to escape before it could happen.

Men on a Mission w/ Oscar vs. Brooklyn Brawler & Brian Costello

Lawler makes fun of MoM as Mo works over Brawler. MoM now beats on Costello then Mabel puts him away with a spinning heel kick (2:16). After the match, Lawler draws Shamu the whale on Mabel.

Thoughts: Mabel’s spinning heel kick seems to be getting a good reaction but the act is still far too corny and Mo looks completely out of place in the WWF.

Tony DeVito vs. Adam Bomb w/ Johnny Polo

Vince tells Lawler he owes the Hart Family an apology but Lawler says he will not do such a thing then makes fun of Stu & Helen for being old so Vince instead apologizes on behalf of the WWF. Bomb beats on DeVito in the corner as Lawler says he meant every word said about the Hart Family. Polo once again talks about “total destruction” as Bomb clotheslines DeVito then hits a back suplex as Lawler and Savage get into a heated argument. Bomb then slingshots in from the apron with a clohtesline before using the Atom Smasher for the win (2:24).

Thoughts: They tried a little to get over Bomb by cutting to shocked kids in the crowd after he took off his glasses and revealed his colored eyes. However, the focus on commentary was Lawler ragging on the Hart family.

WWF Update with Gorilla Monsoon. We see more footage of Luger traveling the country aboard the Lex Express for his Call to Action campaign.

Mr. Hughes w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Jason Headings

Hughes overpowers Headings as another wreath is delivered at ringside. Hughes busts out a dropkick as Vince tells us where ever Hughes wrestles The Undertaker has the the nearby funeral home send over a wreath then Hughes uses the sidewalk slam for the win (1:59). After the match, Hughes destroys the wreath.

Thoughts: This is the new thing now with Hughes destroying these wreaths after his wins.

King’s Court with guest The Undertaker. This is courtesy of “Wrestling Challenge.” Lawler laughs about Undertaker’s urn being stolen by his personal friend, Mr. Hughes. Lawler also said that Hughes told him he will shove Undertaker into the urn. Undertaker grabs Lawler’s arm and tells him he’s too concerned with his belongings and should be more concerned about how close he is standing to death’s door. Undertake now has the mic in his hand as Lawler backs off with Undertaker telling Hughes to bring him the urn before he has to look for it and when that happens………..rest in peace. More hype for the Undertaker/Hughes feud with zero talk about Undertaker’s match against Giant Gonzalez at SummerSlam. Gonzalez has disappeared since the angle where Hughes stole the urn so why even bother with this match to begin with as it was not a hot feud?

The Headshrinkers w/ Afa vs. Dave Thornberg & Bret Tyler

The Headshrinkers destroy their opponents before the bell. Thornberg is out cold on the mat so they roll him over to Tyler and Tyler tags in and gets dropped with a double headbutt. They now fold Tyler in half with an assisted powerbomb as the camera also show Thornberg still out on the apron. The Headshrinkers now hit each other then Afa yells at them as we see Fatu hit a top rope splash for the win (3:03).

Thoughts: The Headshrinkers destroy their opponents again as it seems they are being built up as tag title contenders.

SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund. We learn that Shawn Michaels vs. Mr. Perfect will take place for the Intercontinental Title. We also hear Bret Hart in a promo talk about destroying Lawler at “the SummerSlam.”

Glen Ruth vs. Mr. Perfect

The announcers talk about the Shawn vs. Perfect match at SummerSlam as the camera focuses on Mr. Perfect t-shirts worn by a few fans in the front row. Lawler talks about Bret being a coward and getting him upset on purpose. Perfect grabs a side headlock then takes Ruth down with a dropkick after an Irish whip sequence. Perfect chops Ruth a few times on the outside before whipping him into the steps. Perfect rolls Ruth inside and puts him away with the Perfect Plex (1:56).

Thoughts: They talked more about Bret/Lawler than they did about the upcoming IC Title match at SummerSlam. Plus, ever since Shawn regained the title his feud against Perfect took a back seat and Perfect really feels like he has been downgraded.

The Ludvig Borga video from RAW is shown. Its clear he is getting a big push.

Clips of the “WrestleMania: The Album” release party as Vince tells us how its big in England. A clip of the WrestleMania music video is shown.

Sensational Sherri is in the ring for her match against Luna Vachon. We then see Luna & Bigelow come out with Luna’s arm in a cast. Bigelow grabs the mic and says he cannot believe Sherri as she hurt Luna, who is sporting a cast. Sherri then slaps Bigelow but gets cornered until Luna chokes her out from behind. Tatanka runs out to attack Bigelow and knocks him out of the ring then eventually saves Sherri. The reason for this was Luna had a legitimate injury thus unable to wrestle. Plus, Sherri had given her notice (then was fired sometime afterwards) so they used it to get heat for the Bigelow/Tatanka feud. This was Sherri’s final WWF TV appearance and it sure did end on a whimper. Plus, for those expecting a featured match it was a letdown.

Next week in action are the Smoking Gunns, Adam Bomb, Doink the Clown, and Bastion Booger. Vince then plugs 1-2-3 Kid vs. Ted DiBiase on “Wrestling Challenge” and how we’ll see highlights next week. The closes with the scroll of the dates and cities where the Lex Express is stopping.

Final Thoughts: The main focus was on the top two SummerSlam matches (Yoko/Luger, Bret/Lawler). We saw the Undertaker cut a promo on Hughes but not his “Rest in Peace” match against Gonzalez at SummerSlam. The featured match was a bait-and-switch as we are a month away from the PPV.
