WWF All-American Wrestling – May 30, 1993

By Brian Bayless on March 4, 2019

May 30, 1993

Your hosts are Gene Okerlund and Bobby Heenan as they are on location in Pittsburgh, PA for the Bill Fralic Celebrity Golf Tournament.

The hosts are with Fralic and ask him about the tournament. Fralic said the proceeds will go to various youth organizations in the area.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Bob Backlund

This was from the 5/10 RAW taping. Gorilla Monsoon and The Wizard are on commentary. Gorilla, completely going through the motions, mentions the crowd is cheering for Backlund while that is not the case at all. The announcers mention Bigelow’s Intercontinental match tomorrow night on RAW as Backlund uses his agility to avoid Bigelow. Bigelow cheap shots Backlund as the fans are chanting for Bigelow. Backlund comes back with a drop toehold then threatens an elbow drop while maintaining a chinlock but Bigelow reaches the ropes. Bigelow uses another cheap shot then lands a flying headbutt. Bigelow misses another attempt but is able to block a slam attempt. Bigelow blocks yet another slam then we go to break and come back with Bigelow still in control. Backlund avoids a corner charge and tries a slam but Bigelow falls on top and almost gets the win as the fans were upset Backlund kicked out. Bigelow now catches Backlund with a bearhug then Backlund finally gets out but Bigelow starts targeting the back with forearm smashes. Back suplex gets two but Bigelow ducks his head and Backlund almost gets the win with a sunset flip. The Wizard makes a lot of lame jokes about Backlund being old as Bigelow now uses a backbreaker submission but Backlund flips out then hits a back suplex as the bell rings for a time-limit draw (8:33 shown) *1/2. After the match, Backlund goes after Bigelow then the fans chant for five more minutes. Backlund wants Bigelow to go five more and they shake but Bigelow attacks Backlund from behind and knocks him out of the ring before leaving. Bigelow got cheers from the fans while heading up the aisle.

Thoughts: Just a basic match that also highlights how RAW has a bit of a heel crowd and further proof the Backlund babyface push is not working.

Back to the hosts on the golf course as we learn that Heenan had been picking up balls in play on the fairway and putting them in his pocket, stating they were free.

An ad for the King of the Ring PPV airs.

The Steiner Brothers defeat Mike Bell & Tony DeVito in a match from the 5/29 edition of “Superstars.”

We now see Heenan hiding behind a tree while whistling and tossing golf balls to taunt someone on the green.

The Razor Ramon/The Kid segment from this week’s syndicated shows airs.

The “No Hope with Dope” essay airs.

Back to the course as Heenan is now figuring out other ways to mess with the golfers.

Mr. Perfect defeats Doink the Clown in a King of the Ring qualifying mach from the 5/24 edition of “Monday Night RAW.”

King of the Ring Report airs.

The hosts are once again with Fralic, who talks about the kids charities the proceeds will be helping.

Final Thoughts: Heenan was amusing while on the golf course but the featured match was not very good and the show felt stale. Gorilla was just terrible on commentary by this point (Gorilla and The Wizard did commentary for every match) and even Okerlund is starting to feel like a relic from the past. Some of these episodes have interesting exclusive matches though so I’ll be adding recaps periodically.
