May 29, 1993
From the Worcester Memorial Auditorium in Worcester, MA
Your hosts are Vince McMahon, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and Jerry “The King” Lawler. The announcers talk about the Yokozuna vs. Hulk Hogan match at King of the Ring.
This week in action are the Steiner Brothers, Doink the Clown, and Mr. Perfect. Plus, an interview with Sensational Sherri and more.
Tatanka vs. Ricky Rich
Tatanka chops Rich on the corner to start. He then clotheslines him down and points into the camera to yell at Bam Bam Bigelow. The announcers talk about how Tatanka and Bigelow could meet in the King of the Ring Tournament by winning their first round matches as Tatanka stays in control. The announcers now talk about Tatanka’s 1.5 year long undefeated streak as Tatanka fires up before using the Samoan drop for the win (2:38). Lawler then draws a headband and exploding cigar on Tatanka.
Thoughts: They focused on the Tatanka/Bigelow feud here and how they could meet in the second round of the King of the Ring Tournament. Also, Tatanka’s undefeated streak is mentioned yet again but in all his key matches they’ve been having him win by DQ or have a no contest so its lost a lot of prestige.
WWF Update with Gorilla Monsoon. This week’s focus is on Shawn Michaels and how Marty Jannetty came back on RAW two weeks ago to beat him for the Intercontinental Title then how he wrestled a double count out with Crush last week as the question asked is Shawn in a slump.
We get an ad for the “WWF Royal Rumble” video game for Super Nintendo that features Mr. Perfect. Man, my friends and I played that game a ton as kids. One neighborhood friend had Super Nintendo while myself and others had Sega Genesis so we went to his house to play the game.
Doink the Clown vs. Kevin Armstrong
Vince suggests Doink will be more vicious than ever after losing to Mr. Perfect on RAW this past Monday night. Doink takes it to the mat as the announcers talk about his feud against Crush. Doink stays in control then uses the stump puller for the win (1:48).
Thoughts: Since Doink did not qualify for the tournament they had him destroy an enhancement talent to get some heat back.
An ad for the King of the Ring PPV airs.
Boni Blackstone welcomes Sensational Sherri to the interview platform. She asks Sherri about Luna Vachon as they go over their history together and wonders when there feud will end. Sherri tells Luna no matter what it takes she will take out her weave and every hair out of her eye brows while saying Luna will be on her knees and say “Sherri, you truly are Sensational.” This feud continues and while the brawls between them have been awesome they need to start actually hyping a match between these two. And while I like both characters they are not the best on the stick.
Yokozuna w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Tony Roy
Vince believes that Yokozuna has gained a lot more weight and he is correct. Yokozuna clotheslines Roy then knocks him down with a chop. Vince now says Hogan has trimmed down while Yokozuna has bulked up and expects Hogan to have more agility than before as Lawler laughs. Lawler says Hogan is preoccupied with Hollywood thus unable to beat Yokozuna then Yokozuna puts Roy out of his misery with a Bonzai drop (2:16).
Thoughts: Hearing the commentary for this match you could just tell how poor of a job the build has been for the Yoko/Hogan King of the Ring title bout. Its just been Yokozuna squash match wins and these on location promos (mind you, these promos have all been terrible) with Hogan that air in the King of the Ring Report that come off like Hogan can’t be bothered to appear on TV rather than a wrestler who also does acting. Really uninspired stuff.
We are shown a clip of The Kid defeating Razor Ramon on RAW two weeks ago then this past Monday’s interview. We then hear from The Kid, wearing a RAW t-shirt, as he says $2,500 is a lot of money but Razor is out of destroy him and not wrestle and cannot risk his career because that supports his family. Kid closes by saying “its just not worth it” a few times.
Steiner Brothers vs. Mike Bell & Tony DeVito
Vince believes there is nothing that can stand in their way en route to becoming Tag Team Champions while Lawler says Money Inc. will do just that as Scott beats on Bell. The announcers now put over the eight-man tag at the PPV as Rick tags in and hits a clothesline before a super belly-to-belly suplex. Scott is back in the match and hits DeVito with a powerbomb then the Steiners use a Doomsday Bulldog for the win (3:07).
Thoughts: Another win for The Steiners, who will eventually get a title shot against Money Inc.
King of the Ring Report with Gene Okerlund. We learn that Crush vs. Shawn Michaels has been added to the show.
Clip of last week’s “King’s Court” as Lawler says Luna Vachon will be the guest this week on “Wrestling Challenge.”
Mr. Perfect vs. Rich Myers
Perfect grabs a side headlock then hits a dropkick as the announcers talk about his King of the Ring match against Mr. Hughes. Perfect tosses Myers out from the corner then shorty after that uses the Perfect Plex for the win (2:11).
Thoughts: Hype for the Perfect/Hughes first round King of the Ring match.
Next week we will see Papa Shango vs. Bret Hart. Also in action are Lex Luger, Smoking Gunns, and Mr. Hughes.
The show closes with Razor, who Vince says has become the laughing stock of the WWF, saying that no one laughs at him then tells “stick man” no one turns down his money and ups the offer to $5,000 just for a rematch. They are really pushing this story hard on TV as we will have to wait until next week for Kid to give an answer.
Final Thoughts: Besides the PPV hype they are also strongly pushing the Razor/Kid angle. And like I mentioned above the Yokozuna vs. Hogan rematch is not feeling like a must-see match in the slightest with Hogan’s awful promos not helping out matters and with just two more weeks of TV until the PPV there is not much time to drum up more interest.
