WWF Mania – May 29th, 1993

By Brian Bayless on February 28, 2019

May 29, 1993

Todd Pettengill is your host

This week’s featured match is Mr. Hughes vs. Owen Hart

We see how there were two Doinks on the 5/24 edition of RAW.

Pettengill runs down the show, including the exclusive match of Owen Hart vs. Mr. Hughes.

Adam Bomb defeat Bert Centeno from the 5/24 edition of RAW.

Clip of The Kid defeating Razor Ramon on the 5/17 edition of RAW. After that, Pettengill says he is more calling himself the “1-2-3 Kid” as we see Razor on RAW this past Monday offering Kid $2,500 for a rematch.

Crush vs. Shawn Michaels KotR Qualifier on the 5/22 edition of “Superstars.”

Back to the studio as we get a comedy bit to advertise Undertaker and Randy Savage jackets.

Mr. Perfect defeats Doink the Clown from the 5/24 edition of RAW.

King of the Ring Report airs.

King’s Court with guests Harvey Whippleman & Giant Gonzalez from the 5/23 edition of “Wrestling Challenge” airs.

Back to the studio as we get more bits to advertise merchandise, this time a new Hogan t-shirt.

Mr. Hughes w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. “The Rocket” Owen Hart

Gorilla Monsoon and The Wizard are on commentary. This match took place at the 5/4 “Superstars” tapings in Worcester, MA. The announcers talk about how if Mr. Hughes and Bret Hart both advance to the 2nd round of the King of the Ring tournament they would end up facing each other. Hughes shoves down Owen, who ducks underneath and whacks Hughes in the face. Hughes then backs Owen into the corner and beats him down for a bit. Owen catches Hughes with a drop toehold then works the arm. We get a spot that seems messed up as OWen went for an enziguiri that was off a bit but it also appeared that Hughes froze and forgot to sell the move. Owen goes back to the arm and works that for a while. Owen whiffs on a dropkick then Hughes chops away. Hughes then uses a big boot and a clothesline but eats boot on a charge. Owen uses a bulldog and a few dropkicks but ends up getting caught with a sidewalk slam as Hughes picks up the win (4:46) *.

Thoughts: Not too good. This was Owen’s first taping back since injuring his knee against Bam Bam Bigelow in a match that aired on Superstars about a month ago. He pretty much just worked the arm in this match as these two did not work well together. The result also shows that Owen is going to be lower card as a singles with “The Rocket” gimmick.

Pettengill tells us that next week’s exclusive match is Fatu vs. El Matador.

Back to the studio as Pettengill plugs RAW on Memorial Day with Marty Jannetty defending the Intercontinental Title against Bam Bam Bigelow.

Final Thoughts: The featured match was disappointing but the rest of the show did a fine job at recapping the top segments from last week’s TV. I like to periodically review these if they have interesting exclusive matches so stay tuned for a for more in the future.
