WWF Superstars of Wrestling – April 10th, 1993
By Brian Bayless on February 14, 2019
April 10, 1993
From the North Charleston Civic Center in North Charleston, SC
Your hosts are Vince McMahon, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and Jerry “The King” Lawler
We start off the show with still photos of WrestleMania narrated by Vince. We also learn that the Coliseum Home Video release of this show will be available on April 22nd.
Vince talks about hearing from WWF President Jack Tunney as to whether or not Hulk Hogan will remain champion after Yokozuna & Mr. Fuji’s protest.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Barry Horowitz
This is Duggan’s first match on TV since being attacked by Yokozuna. Duggan starts at USA chant after beating on Horowitz. Duggan hits a suplex then yells for Yokozuna as Vince promises we will get an update after this match about Tunney’s decision on the WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Duggan then scoops Horowitz up for a slam and follows with the Three Point Stance for the win (1:48).
Thoughts: Duggan was over well in his return since the attack as it appears he is still feuding with Yokozuna.
WWF Update with Gorilla Monsoon. He is sitting down behind the desk of the WrestleMania interview set. We see the clip of Okerlund with Yokozuna & Fuji from RAW where Fuji protested as the match was not sanctioned. Now, Tunney tells us after much deliberation since there was an oral contract that Hogan accepted with a WWF referee present in the ring that Hogan will remain champion.
Ad for WrestleMania IX replay airs.
David Clements vs. Papa Shango
The announcers talk about Tunney’s decision as Vince once again plugs the PPV replay. Shango beats down Clements in the corner as Lawler claims Bret got squashed while Vince says that Luger knocked Bret out at the brunch before the PPV and we should order the replay to see for ourselves. Shango drops an elbow as Lawler says Bret had no business at a brunch before the biggest match of his career then Shango uses a reverse shoulderbreaker for the win (2:18). After the match, Vince tells us that Mr. Hughes will be making his debut as Shango shoots off his stick.
Thoughts: Shango gets a win as he was coming off of a dark match loss to El Matador at WrestleMania but the real focus was on commentary regarding Luger attacking Bret.
WWF Fan Club ad airs. It features Randy Savage.
El Matador vs. Brooklyn Brawler
Lawler continues to make fun of Savage as we also learn that Savage has a dog named “Hercules.” Brawler works the arm as Lawler jokes he almost went blind wrestling Matador because grease would fly into his eyes everytime he punched him. Brawler then gets in Matador’s face but gets stomped trying a monkey flip. Matador slams Brawler then works the arm as Lawler claims his prediction of Gonzalez destroying Undertaker was correct and Vince talks about double Doinks appearing at WrestleMania. Matador still works the arm then runs wild before the El Paso de Muerte gets the win (2:38). After the match, Lawler draws a Chiquita banana to show us who Matador dances with.
Thoughts: I really noticed how this week Lawler’s material was edgier and he really dominated the commentary for this match. The focus on commentary was on the Gonzalez/Undertaker match and the appearance of a second Doink at WrestleMania.
Gene Okerlund is now doing interviews with talent to hype house shows as part of the “Event Center” segments. It looked more like what he did in the early 80’s as he talked with talent in front of a plain background. Mooney’s final appearance would be the following week so Okerlund is now doing the house show hype.
Still photos of the Lex Luger vs. Mr. Perfect match from WrestleMania are shown.
“The Narcissist” Lex Luger vs. Dale Wolfe
Vince talks about Tunney launching a “full-scale investigation” on Luger for these knockouts. Luger beats on Wolfe as Vince talks about Luger attacking Bret at the WrestleMania brunch. Luger then catches Wolfe with a powerslam then the running forearm smash for the win (2:08). After the match, Luger poses in front of his mirror.
Thoughts: The story now is that we are going to find out why Luger’s opponents are getting knocked out. They also once again played up a Luger/Bret feud.
Still photos of the Shawn Michaels vs. Tatanka match at WrestleMania as they pushed Luna Vachon’s debut and how she beat down Sensational Sherri after the match and backstage.
Duane Gill vs. Kamala w/ Slick
Lawler makes fun of Kamala for being too stupid to realize you need to get someone on their back for a pin as Savage quips back that Lawler’s jealous for not being able to get anyone on their back. Gill hammers away but Kamala takes him down with an overhead chop. Kamala then uses a thrust kick and knocks Gill down on the apron a few times. We see Hogan on the cover of the newest edition of “WWF Magazine” that features an article on Slick & Kamala. Vince tells us again that Kamala is learning English then Kamala hits a splash and covers then hits another splash and still takes forever to roll Gill on his back then finally hooks both legs and gets the win (2:48).
Thoughts: They’re still trying with this Kamala babyface looks but he acts and looks the same as before so no one seems to care.
WrestleMania IX Report with Sean Mooney. We see still photos of the Undertaker vs. Giant Gonzalez match as this feud will continue.
Mr. Hughes vs. JD Stryker
This match is courtesy of “Wrestling Challenge” and Jim Ross has replaced Gorilla Monsoon on commentary with Bobby Heenan. Hughes is wearing suspenders and slacks with a dress shirt. He keeps his shades on and powerslams Stryker but pulls him up after a one count. Hughes pulls up Stryker after a backbreaker then hammers away then catches Stryker with a chokeslam for the win (2:08). After the match, Hughes tosses Stryker outside.
Thoughts: Hughes definitely had a cool look and was fairly impressive in his debut. He definitely had a presence. According to Hughes in his shoot interview with RF Video, he drove to this tapings and was hired on the spot after a dark match then told he would be eventually feuding with The Undertaker.
Another ad to order the WrestleMania replay.
Vince plugs the special edition of “Spotlight Magazine” with Andre the Giant on the cover. We then get the Andre video package for Andre as the first member of the WWF Hall of Fame.
Bob Backlund vs. Anthony Howard
Backlund grounds Howard then we hear from Backlund in an insert promo saying he will induct Andre into the Hall of Fame and hopes to be inducted himself one day. Lawler makes fun of Backlund as Vince calls Backlund a genuinely nice man then Backlund hits a back suplex and uses a cradle for the win (1:51). After the match, Backlund gets Howard back up on the apron and tells him to work hard and shakes his hand as they walk off together.
Thoughts: This segment was Vince telling us how Backlund was a great man and Backlund proved that by walking off with the man he beat after giving him some advice. They’re really trying hard to salvage Backlund as a face trying to come back and reclaim his glory days but that ship has sailed.
In action next week are Mr. Perfect, Crush, The Headshrinkers, and Yokozuna. Plus, the featured match of Owen Hart vs. Bam Bam Bigelow.
Final Thoughts: Much like we saw this past Monday on RAW, this show really pushed the WrestleMania replay. We also saw some WrestleMania fallout and learned there is an investigation into Luger’s forearm. And next week we get a featured match as the post-WrestleMania programs will be the focus going forward.
