WWF Mania – March 20th, 1993

By Brian Bayless on February 4, 2019

March 20, 1993

Todd Pettengill is your host.

This week’s featured match is Lex Luger vs. El Matador.

“The Narcissist” Lex Luger vs. El Matador

This is from the 3/9 “Wrestling Challenge” taping in Augusta, GA. And it was featured on the “UK Fan Favorites 93” Coliseum Home Video release. Gorilla Monsoon and Lord Alfred Hayes are the announcers. Lord Alfred says that Luger sends his mother $10 a week. Luger flexes his pecs after shoving Matador into the corner as the announcers talk about Luger’s wristband possibly being loaded. We end in a stalemate after some mat work then Luger applies a wristlock. Matador switches to a hammerlock but Luger cheap shots him after a break. Luger hammers away as we go to commercial then return with Matador almost putting Luger away with a small package then a rollup before running into a knee smash. Matador fights back and uses a turnbuckle smash then starts firing away. Matador runs wild and hits the flying forearm but Luger is just able to kick out. Luger begs for mercy in the corner as Matador fires away but Matador eats boot on a charge then Luger puts Matador away with a running forearm smash (8:39) **1/2.

Thoughts: Good match and one I’m glad I got to see. Too bad a good chunk was missed during the break though. Matador had a strong performance with great timing on his comebacks and Luger looked fine too. On commentary, Lord Alfred was acting more heelish than usual it seemed.

In the studio, Pettengill says that Luger will be on “Superstars” with a message for Mr. Perfect.

WrestleMania IX Report airs.

Back in the studio, Pettengill shills for “Monday Night RAW” and “All-American Wrestling” that are also on the USA Network.

Kamala defeats Tim Patterson in a match from the 3/14 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.”

Headshrinkers and the Nasty Boys fight to a double countout from the 3/15 edition of “Monday Night RAW.”

Pettengill is in the studio talking about the end of the tag match then Pettengill is about to have food thrown at him but instead drags out his stunt double to take the hit.

The package on WWF’s charitable efforts is shown.

Yokozuna defeats Casey Cleric from the 3/13 edition of “Superstars.”

In the studio, Pettengill lays down on the floor as they simulate what its like to get hit with the Bonzai splash.

WrestleMania IX ad airs.

Pettengill bothers people in the control room to end the show.

Final Thoughts: The featured match was good and the show still does a good job of recapping the highlights from the past week. Pettengill is also much better at his job than Rob Bartlett is at his and he is less zoo crew DJ and more sarcastic than in the show’s debut. Anyway, this was a fine episode.
