WWF Mania – March 6th, 1993

By Brian Bayless on January 29, 2019

March 6, 1993

Todd Pettengill is your host.

This week’s featured match is Typhoon vs. Papa Shango.

We see surveillance cam footage of Pettengill trying to enter the studio but the door is locked. He then bangs on the door and starts to run down the show while looking into the security camera.

Papa Shango vs. Typhoon

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is not a hidden gem. This is from the 2/16 “Wrestling Challenge” tapings in San Diego, CA. Your announcers are Sean Mooney and Lord Alfred Hayes. Shango bounces off of Typhoon a few times before getting caught in a slam. Shango rolls outside for a breather then comes in and attacks after a test-of-strength. Typhoon aviods a corner splash and hits another slam then both men miss elbow drops. Typhoon slugs away but Shango takes him into the corner with a drop toehold. Shango now attacks in the corner then gets a two count with a dropkick. Shango hammers away then catches Typhoon with a sleeper hold. Typhoon escapes and takes Shango outside with a clothesline but Shango takes his stick and shoots it at Typhoon and gets disqualified (4:59) DUD. After the match, Shango hits Typhoon with a Saito suplex but Typhoon fights back and hits an avalanche.

Thoughts: Its amazing how several months prior they were pushing Shango as one of the top heels in the company and now he is doing crappy DQ finishes against Typhoon on a secondary show. The match was lousy and the finish even worse.

We now see Pettengil driving as he is trying to get inside WWF World Headquarters to host the show.

The Money Inc. interview from “Monday Night RAW” is shown.

Pettengill has arrived to WWF World Headquarters. He tells us that every WWF show will air the Mega Maniacs response to Money Inc’s challenge.

Pettengill bangs on the door to get in and is finally allowed inside. However, Pettengill is told the building is busy and there is no room for him to host the show.

The Doink vs. Big Bossman match from the 2/27 edition of “Superstars” is shown.

WrestleMania IX Report. At the end, Okerlund tells Pettengill that he’ll never make it to the big leagues if he cannot get into the building.

Kimchee vs. Jim Gorman

This might be the only televised Kimchee match. It was also from the 2/16 “Wrestling Challenge” tapings. Kimchee decks Gorman then whips him into the corner. The announcers talk about Kimchee’s feud with Kamala as Gorman is dumped outside. Kimchee rolls Gorman back in and chokes him out against the ropes as the announcers wonder why Kimchee is not preparing for Kamala against a bigger man, such as Typhoon, then Kimchee uses the camel’s clutch for the win (2:51).

Thoughts: They gave Kimchee a win as they are still promoting his ice cold feud against Kamala. The announcers sure did not put him over much on commentary though.

In the headquarters, Pettengill mocks Slaughter’s chin from the WrestleMania VII poster then says hi to a few employees.

Bret Hart defeats Fatu from this past edition of “Monday Night RAW.”

Pettengill goes into Fred Blassie’s office and marvels at the photographs of Blassie with Henry Kissinger and Muhammad Ali before getting kicked out.

Final Thoughts: They had two exclusive matches, which were not very good, and had a show long theme while not great was brilliant compared to Bartlett’s Elvis Presley stuff from RAW. Plus, if you missed the Bret vs. Fatu match or Doink vs. Big Bossman you got to see them here too so for a recap show it was solid.
