WWF Superstars – February 20th, 1993

By Brian Bayless on January 17, 2019

February 20, 1993

From the San Jose State Event Center in San Jose, CA

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Jerry “The King” Lawler, and “Macho Man” Randy Savage

This week in action are Mr. Perfect, Razor Ramon, and Kamala. Plus, the featured match of Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Earthquake

Razor Ramon vs. Buddy Wayne

Savage notes how Razor won the battle royal on RAW. Razor kicks the crap out of Wayne then hits a super back suplex. Vince hypes up the Razor/Perfect feud then the Razor’s Edge finishes off Wayne (2:17).

Thoughts: More hype for the Razor/Perfect feud which it appears they wrestled their last match together the day this aired at a matinee show in Emmitsburgh, MD. I believe Razor hurt his leg on this show (he appeared that night on crutches and was replaced by Doink).

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown the attack of Beefcake on RAW including what is supposed to be blood on the mat which looked more like spilled juice. Okerlund said Beefcake’s nose was fractured and there was some dislodging of the plates in his head but Beefcake will appear on RAW this Monday night.

Vince now interrupts to tell us that Hulk Hogan will appear on RAW as Savage gets excited.

Bobby Young vs. Mr. Perfect

Perfect runs over Young as the announcers talk about what happened to Beefcake with Savage saying you know its bad when a cheap shot artist like Jimmy Hart did not want to get involved. Perfect chops Young hard in the corner as Vince said Hart accompanied Beefcake to the hospital in the ambulance. Perfect then calls out Razor before hitting the Perfect Plex for the win (2:18). After the match, Lawler draws Dennis the Menace on the Royal Magistrator to show us who Perfect reminds him of as Vince makes fun of the drawing.

Thoughts: Still more hype for the Razor/Perfect feud.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Earthquake

Both guys try to knock each other down then Earthquake gains the advantage. Bigelow avoids an elbow drop and hits a Saito suplex before applying a chinlock. Bigelow hammers away on the back of Earthquake and hits another suplex. Earthquake fights back and hits a pair of avalanches but misses a third attempt and spills outside and gets counted out (4:06) 1/2*.

Thoughts: Bigelow’s suplexes were cool but this was not a good match and the ending was lame. This was Earthquake’s last match with the company before leaving to work for WAR in Japan. Earthquake would return to WWF a year later for a few months

Mike Starr vs. Kamala w/ Rev. Slick

Kamala beats on Starr as Vince tells us the fans are now behind Kamala. We now see Kimchee head down the aisle as Vince says Kimchee used to beat on Kamala and order him around. Slick prevents Kamala from leaving the ring as Savage talks about Kamala chasing Kimchee all over the arena during RAW. Kamala stays and chokes out Starr on the mat then hits a splash and finally roles Starr on his back and gets the win (2:25).

Thoughts: They are setting up for Kimchee vs. Kamala match but no one is caring about Kamala as a face or Slick as a babyface manager.

We now hear from Jim Duggan’s wife, Debra. She talks about all of the injuries her husband has suffered but this injury happened at the worst time, with her pregnant. Debra says she knows that her husband is a proud American but we are not at war with Japan and does not want him to wrestle. I assume she was told to say that after all the bad press WWF received from various Asian-American groups that were offended. After that, Lawler tells Duggan to get a job at a gas station so his kid can grow up to be a grease monkey like his dad but Savage tells Duggan a man has to do what a man has to do and is behind him 100%. Personally, I thought Duggan’s wife did a fantastic job in her role. And this is a lot more interesting than the contrived Japan vs. USA stuff. Now, we will see whether or not Duggan returns.

WrestleMania IX Report with Gene Okerlund. New matches announced are Mr. Perfect vs. Lex Luger, Shawn Michaels vs. Tatanka for the Intercontinental Title, and Steiner Brothers vs. The Headshrinkers.

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Raven Clark

Undertaker beats down Clark as the announcers talk about Giant Gonzalez. Undertaker stays in control then puts Clark away with a tombstone as Vince believes that Undertaker can hit Gonzalez with the tombstone (1:57).

Thoughts: An easy win for The Undertaker as the announcers hyped up his match against Gonzalez at WrestleMania.

Crush tells us about the Headlock on Hunger benefit.

Next week’s featured match is Big Bossman vs. Doink . Also in action are Yokozuna and Lex Luger plus an interview with Giant Gonzalez. We then hear from Doink and Bossman to close out the show.

Final Thoughts: The big news was the official announcement of Hogan appearing on RAW. They also have a storyline for Duggan on whether or not he will return to wrestling with his pregnant wife scared for his well being and their family if he does. And we learned of three WrestleMania matches that seem solid on paper anyway. The featured match was not very good but we get another one next week as the Road to WrestleMania IX continues.
