WWF Wrestling Challenge – February 7th, 1993
By Brian Bayless on January 14, 2019
February 7, 1993
From the Beaumont Convention Center in Beaumont, TX
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan
This week we will see the special challenge between Yokozuna and Jim Duggan from “Superstars.” Also in action are High Energy, The Headshrinkers, Virgil, and Razor Ramon.
High Energy vs. Dale Wolfe & Ken Jackson
Owen dropkicks Wolfe then takes him out of the corner with a monkey flip. Wolfe tags out after an eye poke but Owen takes Johnson down and works the arm. Koko tags in and grounds Johnson before tagging out then soon after that High Energy uses a missile dropkick/jackknife cover combo for the win (1:57).
Thoughts: A showcase for High Energy here as Heenan continues to make fun of Koko’s pants.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Footage of Giant Gonzalez attacking The Undertaker at the Royal Rumble is shown.
Damien Demento vs. Bobby Perez
The announcers talk about Gonzalez as Demento drops Perez with an elbow smash. Demento once again responds to the voices in his head before hitting a clothesline then puts Perez away with a knee drop adjusting his knee pad (1:30). Heenan then compares Duggan vs. Yokozuna to World War II
Thoughts: This was mostly hype for the Duggan/Yokozuna segment and talk about Giant Gonzalez.
An ad for WrestleMania IX airs.
The Yokozuna/Duggan segment from “Superstars”airs.
Tommy Knight vs. Virgil
Knight elbows out of a hammerlock but Virgil fights back. Virgil is then shown in an insert promo talking about the Headlock on Hunger and to donate all of the money you can as Heenan talks about Yokozuna winning this war means Japan is now even with the USA after World War II. I bet. Anyway, Virgil stays in control then uses a Russian leg sweep for the win (1:30).
Thoughts: A match to provide a backdrop to discuss the Yokozuna/Duggan angle and Headlock on Hunger campaign.
Lex Luger’s reveal as The Narcissist from the Royal Rumble is shown.
“Jumping” Jim Brunzell & Gary Jackson vs. The Headshrinkers w/ Afa
Brunzell looks absolutely miserable during the introductions. He’s like 0.7 on the Tony Garea Scale of Disgruntled Veteran Jobbers. The Headshrinkers jump their opponents but they fight back and hit dropkicks. However, the Headshrinkers fight back then the match settles down. Fatu hits Jackson with a back suplex as The Headshrinkers beat him down for a while as the announcers put them over for being the toughest team Samu uses a flying haedbutt for the win (2:37). After the match, The Headshrinkers choke out Jackson as I presume Brunzell already left the ring and the arena.
Thoughts: The Headshrinkers beat the shit out of poor Jackson as they continue to get pushed on TV as a formidable threat.
The Mr. Perfect segment from “Superstars” where he chopped some skinny kid and said it was Luger was shown.
Razor Ramon vs. Rudi Gonzales
Heenan says that Razor is gunning for Mr. Perfect in the short run and whatever is left Luger will take care of and he cannot wait to watch. Razor beats on Gonzales then hits an uranage. Razor beats down Gonzales after getting punched and hits a super back suplex before the Razor’s Edge gets the win (2:56).
Thoughts: Razor looks strong as his feud against Mr. Perfect is near the end but still being hyped on TV.
We get the alert that Brutus Beefcake is coming back to the ring.
Next week in action are Doink, Bam Bam Bigelow, and The Undertaker. Plus, the featured match of Typhoon vs. Razor Ramon. We hear from both men to hype up the match.
Final Thoughts: We get a featured match next week at least as most of this show was about the Yoko/Duggan angle from Superstars.
