Monsoon’s Commentary & Burying Guys
By Scott Keith on December 29, 2018
Over the past couple of days on the blog, we've had discussions about Gorilla Monsoon and the way he'd bury some guys on commentary. His trademark is bitching about the application of an abdominal stretch, but he's also taken some losers to task for flat-out
sucking (like late-era Ken Patera, or a blown-up George Wells).
What's your take on that kind of stuff?
Personally, I kind of liked the "grumpy uncle" aspect of this. Plus, he never used it on guys who were worth much, as I can recall. To me, his criticism of some athletes was what made the moments when he DID mark out for talent (most notably, Bret Hart, "The
Excellence of Execution") mean a lot more. Explaining that "he didn't get ALL of it!" for a slightly-botched move gave some credibility to the matches, too. You'd therefore appreciate when someone hit a move RIGHT and he congratulated it on commentary.
Plus, I never got the sense he was putting himself over the talent (like, say, Larry "rip on Jericho for being blown up" Zbyszko)- one of his biggest regular quotes was "Makes me glad I RETIRED!".
