WWF Superstars – January 9th, 1993
By Brian Bayless on December 27, 2018
January 9, 1993
From the Green Bay Expo Center in Green Bay, WI
Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Jerry “The King” Lawler, and “Macho Man” Randy Savage
The show starts off with the end of last week’s interview segment with Kamala, Harvey Whippleman, and Kimchee where Slick interrupts to tell Kamala not to take the abuse and that he is a man, not a beast.
Kamala w/ Harvey Whippleman & Kimchee vs. Todd Becker
Kamala beats down Becker as Lawler says that Kamala needs the treatment from Whippleman & Kimchee in order to remain aggressive. Kamala then hits a double chop and follows with a splash but remains confused on how to pin someone then finally turns Becker over and covers for the win (1:40). After the match, Whippleman & Kimchee yell at Kamala. Kimchee then shoves Kamala a few times as Whippleman yells and points his finger. Slick now runs down to the ring and steps in between them and tells Kimchee & Whippleman that they are no longer in charge of Kamala. Kimchee decks Slick then Kamala checks on Slick with concern and ends up chopping Kimchee over the top rope then chases Whippleman up the aisle.
Thoughts: Kamala is now a babyface after attacking his manager and handler. We also saw Slick already fulfill his New Years promise by showing someone the light. Now, we should expect Whippleman to find a new client to manage. Both Kamala and Slick said they liked each other personally but not professionally and did not care how the angle played out.
This week in action are The Steiner Brothers, Undertaker, and Bam Bam Bigelow.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown the Owen Hart interview from “Mania” where Razor Ramon ran out to attack Hart. We then hear from both Razor and Bret in the same exact promos we heard on Mania.
Butch Banks Rock Werner vs. The Steiner Brothers
Scott starts off against Werner as Vince tells us to expect things we have never seen before with The Steiners. We then hear from The Steiners as they talk about the Beverly Brothers not going to like what happens to them at the Royal Rumble. Rick scares Banks outside then kills him with a clothesline. The Steiners stay in control as Rick hits a top rope belly-to-belly then Scott puts Banks away with a hurricarana, called the Frankensteiner by Savage (3:12).
Thoughts: A showcase for The Steiners to build up to their PPV debut against the Beverly Brothers.
After the match we see the clown laughing in the aisle. Raymond Rougeau tries to speak with him but the clown continues to laugh as Vince says we might hear from the clown later on in the show.
We hear from Bobby Heenan telling us that Mr. Perfect is afraid of The Narcissus and that Michealangelo is unable to sculpt The Narcissus, who is also beyond perfect.
George Petrovsky vs. Lance Cassidy
Vince wonders if Cassidy will be in the Royal Rumble then talks about the Rumble match. Cassidy sends Petrovksy over the top rope with a dropkick as Lawler wants to pull out Cassidy’s hair. Vince then alerts us that he has confirmation of Rougeau interviewing the clown on this show with the announcers talking about that for a bit. Cassidy works the arm and mixes in a couple more dropkicks. Petrovsky hits a slam but misses a leg drop then Cassidy uses a bulldog for the win (2:47).
Thoughts: Cassidy had quit the company at this point and this was his final match on Superstars. This mach was a backdrop to talk about the main angles in the promotion.
We see that Mr. Perfect will be on the cover of “WWF Magazine.”
Rougeau now welcomes the clown out to the aisle for an interview to find out why he is in the WWF. The clown comes out with his arm in a sling then tells us that his name is Doink. We see clips of all the pranks he pulled on people as Doink laughs. Rougeau says Doink is only make himself laugh as Doink loves taking away the smiles of the kids in the crowd. Rougeau asks Doink about the warning he received last week from Crush but Doink says he is having a good time and does not care whose expense he laughs at then squirts water in Rougeau’s eye from his flower. The clown laughs on the stage as Vince calls him a sick man. The clown’s name is finally revealed as Doink, who was played by Matt Borne. According to Borne, he got the gimmick after telling Vince McMahon about the pranks Lonnie Mayne used to pull in Portland. Borne also said that Road Warrior Hawk came up with an evil clown gimmick years prior. Borne also prepared for the role by watching old episodes of Batman, specifically focusing on Cesar Romero as the Joker.
Scott Zappa vs. The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer
The announcers talk about the clown then the premiere of Monday Night RAW this Monday as Undertaker faces Damien Demento. Undertaker gouges Zappa’s face as the announcers hype the Undertaker/Demento match. Undertaker now hits Zappa with a flying clothesline before using a tombstone for the win (2:47). After the match, Lawler uses his Royal Magistrator and believes Papa Shango will pop out of the urn.
Thoughts: They hyped up the Undertaker/Demento match for RAW and teased a potential Undertaker/Shango feud, which has already been going around the house show circuit.
Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund. We learn that Shawn Michaels will defend the Intercontinental Title against Marty Jannetty with Sensational Sherri appearing in someone’s corner. Shawn says he has not had a chance to talk to Sherri but like any other woman Sherri will be with him as Marty says the Rumble is “Marty Jannetty Day” and that maybe Shawn does not know Sherri as well as he thinks. I think Marty celebrated a bit early that day. Other names announced for the Rumble match are the Tenryu, El Matador, Typhoon, Samu, Fatu, and Jim Duggan. Tenryu is back for what I believe was a potential partnership between WAR and the WWF. It will be his first PPV since WrestleMania VII.
Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Red Tyler
Bigelow beats on Tyler then we hear from Big Bossman in an insert promo saying everyone will find out that Bigelow is a punk at the Rumble. Bigelow hammers away as Vince says that Savage & Rob Bartlett will be ringside for Monday Night RAW then Bigelow puts Tyler away with a flying headbutt (2:22).
Thoughts: Basic hype for Bossman/Bigelow at the Rumble and the news that Vince, along with Savage and some guy named Rob Bartlett will be the hosts of Monday Night RAW.
Next week in action are Yokozuna, Nasty Boys, Crush, and Razor Ramon. Plus, an interview with Shawn Michaels.
The show closes with a replay of Kamala turning on Kimchee & Whippleman.
Final Thoughts: The key points on this show was the clown revealing his name and Kamala turning on his handlers to join Slick. We also saw the IC Title match announced for the Rumble along with a few other names who will be part of the Rumble match as the PPV is just two weeks away.
