January 2, 1993
From the Green Bay Expo Center in Green Bay, WI
Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Jerry “The King” Lawler, and Randy Savage as he returns to the booth. Lawler lets us know that he has been officially added to the Royal Rumble match.
This week’s featured match is Mr. Perfect vs. The Berzerker. Also in action are Yokozuna and Crush.
Mr. Perfect vs. The Berzerker
Both men trade chops then Perfect dropkicks Berzerker over the top rope after an Irish whip sequence. Berzerker returns and headbutts Perfect in the gut before hammering away. Berzerker avoids a charge as Perfect’s shoulder hits the post then Berzerker swings his sword on the outside but misses and hits the post. Berzerker returns and gets sent outside with a back drop then we see Ric Flair heading down to the ring as he is held back by several officials. Perfect is ready to fight then shoves Berzerker down after getting attacked from behind. Flair heads back then Berzerker knocks Perfect outside as we go to break. The action returns as Berzerker drags Perfect back inside and hits a front falling slam for a two count but after that ducks his head as Perfect hits the Perfect Plex for the win (6:36) *.
Thoughts: Not so much a match as it was a segment to further the Perfect/Flair feud. Its clear those two will be feuding through the Rumble.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week we hear from Bobby Heenan as he runs down Mr. Perfect and says Flair will go through him. However, Heenan says he will unveil someone at the Royal Rumble who is even more perfect and we will see “Narcissus.” Okerlund then reads the definition of the word narcissus which means a conceited self-centered that thinks too highly of themselves and being obsessed with their own appearance. Okerlund wants to know if this person can live up to Heenan’s rhetoric. We now have Heenan saying he will introduce someone who will apparently make Mr. Perfect seem completely inferior in every way. And odd that Heenan is going to bring in someone with the Flair/Perfect feud going, which means that Flair is either the winning the Rumble and feuding with Bret heading into WrestleMania or there might be some truth to those rumors of Flair leaving to go back to WCW so Heenan needs someone else to continue the Perfect feud.
George Anderson vs. Yokozuna w/ Mr. Fuji
Yokozuna catches Anderson with a belly-to-belly suplex then beats him down. We hear from Earthquake in an insert promo telling Yokozuna that he is used to being the biggest in the WWF and will make sure he will not win the Royal Rumble as Yokozuna then puts Anderson away with the sit-down splash from the middle rope (2:47).
Thoughts: We have another super heavyweight challenging Yokozuna in the Rumble match and it seems that Earthquake would be part of the Rumble match after making that comment.
We now get a clip from the new “WWF Mania” show with Razor Ramon attacking Owen Hart backstage as Vince promises the whole interview before this happened will be shown in its entirety. At least they are running an angle to hype the debut of Mania.
Marty Jannetty vs. Tom Stone
Lawler accuses Marty of hitting Sensational Sherri on purpose. Marty takes Stone down with a baseball slide then flies out with a pescado as we see the clown back with his bucket as he scoops out water with a cup. Marty grounds Stone with a few different holds as Vince says people like to see Marty wrestle because of all his different moves. Marty stays in control then hits a flying fist drop for the win after using the Rocker Dropper as a set up move (3:04). After the match, the clown is celebrating then threatens to throw water at Marty but its revealed that the bucket is empty as the clown laughs.
Thoughts: They mentioned Sherri again here as they set up for her return to TV. Marty continues to show promise in his feud with Shawn and the ability to be a decent midcard singles act.
An ad for the Royal Rumble airs.
Damien Demento vs. Mitch Bishop
Demento drops Bishop with a headbutt as the announcers talk about Demento’s chances if he was part of the Rumble match and in a funny moment get Savage saying he’d have to go through 30 other guys to win with Vince correcting him that it’s 29 guys he’d have to go through. Demento stays in control as the announcers talk about the Bret/Razor match at the Rumble then Demento hits a plain old knee drop for the win (3:07). After the match, Lawler debuts the “Royal Magistrator” and proceeds to draw the clown’s face as the voice Demento hears in his head. Savage says Lawler drew himself while Lawler puts himself over as an artist.
Thoughts: They acted like Demento would be part of the Rumble match here and we also saw the debut of the Royal Magistrator.
Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund. New additions to the Rumble match include Earthquake (who Okerlund acted like was already confirmed for the match based on his promo against Yokozuna), Carlos Colon (who is billed as representing Puerto Rico), Crush, Papa Shango, and Rick Martel. Not exactly the best group of announcements here. And Colon was added as part of a potential partnership between WWF and the WWC. Plus, The Steiner Brothers vs. Beverly Brothers will take place too.
Crush vs. Dave Sigfritts
Crush uses a waistlock to ground Sigfritts as we see the clown back at ringside antagonizing fans by squirting water on them. We then hear from Crush in an insert promo wishing us a Happy New Year then telling us he is coming to the Rumble to win as he used his native tongue. Sigfritts lands a few strikes but gets caught with a backbreaker then Crush uses a head vice for the win (2:35). After the match, Crush approaches the clown and grabs his arm to warn him what will happen if he continues to bother the kids as the clown was throwing a ball at a kid’s face. Crush leaves then the clown laughs.
Thoughts: With the past few weeks of the announcers putting over Crush’s temper and the fact he had an altercation with a clown who plays pranks its clear to see where this is going.
Next week in action are Bam Bam Bigelow, The Undertaker, Kamala, and the debut of the Steiner Brothers.
Now, we see Crush backstage with Raymond Rougeau. Crush tells us that his grandfather worked very hard as a clown so he will not stand for this clown picking on the kids. That’s quite the backstory. Did they just think this one up right before the camera rolled?
Final Thoughts: We started off the new year of the news that Heenan will be revealing a new wrestler at the Royal Rumble. And saw an altercation between Crush and Doink along with other Royal Rumble news as the PPV is just three more weeks away.
