WWF Intercontinental Title Match: Repo Man vs. British Bulldog (c)
Perfect calls Bulldog an egomaniac. We start off on the mat as Bulldog takes control with an armbar. Vince brings up Bulldog’s match against Bret Hart at SummerSlam and refers to it as a classic while Bulldog hits Repo with a press slam. Repo catches Bulldog with a hotshot then hits a leg drop for a two count. Repo Man works the arm now as Perfect says if Bulldog wins tonight then he will lose the title to Shawn Michaels tonight on “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” Repo uses a shoulderbreaker for two then catches Bulldog with a clothesline to cut off a comeback attempt. Both men miss elbow drops then Repo heads to the middle rope but Bulldog cuts him off in midair. Bulldog hits a vertical suplex and then the running powerslam gets the win (4:56) *1/4. The announcers then plug the IC Title match on SNME.
Thoughts: They’re trying to push the storyline of Bulldog having to defend the title twice in one day and that its an impossible task. This match was bad when Repo Man was on offense. And this wound up being Bulldog’s last match on Superstars for two years.
Back to the announcers as Perfect congratulates Shawn as the new IC champion because Bulldog will never be able to defend the title twice in one day. Vince also says Money Inc. vs. Ultimate Maniacs for the Tag Team Titles and Bret Hart vs. Papa Shango for the World Heavyweight Title will also happen as they bill the show as a triple crown.
This week in action are The Headshrinkers, Marty Jannetty, and Nailz. Plus, an interview with the Natural Disasters.
Vince puts over the Bob Backlund feature in “WWF Magazine” then we get another montage of Backlund’s past accomplishments and his current workout regime. Backlund then tells us that he loves his family and the fans but now its a matter of how successful he can be in today’s WWF.
Jim Powers & Bob St. Laurent vs. The Headshrinkers w/ Afa
The announcers talk about the rest of the SNME card then we see the clown head down the aisle. Powers tags out after working the arm of Fatu then St. Laurent gets destroyed. The clown is reacting to the match as St. Laurent continues to get destroyed until Fatu puts him away with a top rope splash (2:15). The Headshrinkers mess with St. Laurent after the match.
Thoughts: Another impressive squash match win by The Headshrinkers as they are going to be feuding with the Natural Disasters.
We get another Bam Bam Bigelow telling us his flames will consume the entire WWF. He then yells his name.
Iron Mike Sharpe vs. Marty Jannetty
Sharpe taunts the fans and gets dropkicked outside. Sharpe rakes Marty’s eyes as the announcers bring up Shawn’s title shot on SNME with Vince saying if Shawn won he believed Marty would be first in line for a shot. We then hear from Marty in an insert promo telling Shawn he works for what it gets and wants to kick his butt. Back to the match as Marty uses a mat slam then heads up top for a fist drop and the win (2:01).
Thoughts: Marty was never the best promo but he showed a lot of fire here as he will be feuding with Shawn going forward.
WWF Update with Lord Alfred Hayes. This week’s focus is on Bret Hart as they call him a fighting champion. We see a clip of his match against The Berzerker from “Prime Time Wrestling” last week then they plug his SNME match against Shango and how if he retains he’ll defend the belt against Virgil on Superstars. Bret tells us he is not hiding behind anything then tells Virgil he’ll be stepping into the ring with the Excellence of Execution and Virgil tell Bret while respecting him he wants the belt as bad as Bret wants to retain. We get a title match next week on TV as its face vs. face. And Virgil, a lower midcarder, is getting a chance due to Bret not ducking any challenger.
Nailz vs. Ken Johnson
Nailz chokes out Johnson in the corner a few times before tossing him to the mat. He uses more choking as Vince plugs the Survivor Series Hotline and how for the first-time ever you can get called by a WWF Superstar. We get plug of the Nailz “Viewpoint” section in WWF Magazine as Nailz puts Johnson away with a chokehold (2:05). After the match we see the clown up in the bleachers then Nailz shoves Johnson through the ropes.
Thoughts: More focus on the clown as each week he keeps getting closer to the action. We got hype for Nailz/Bossman.
An ad for SNME airs.
Joe Blevins welcomes the Natural Disasters & Nasty Boys to the interview platform. They tell their opponents, Beverly Brothers & Money Inc., they will not survive at the Survivor Series. Nasty Boys also call Jimmy Hart a “turkey” and promise that he will be served. Generic babyface promo to hype up their match at Survivor Series.
Survivor Series Report airs.
Kamala w/ Harvey Whippleman & Kimchee vs. Steve Gillespie
Whippleman threatens to knock out ring announcer Howard Finkel if he does not show proper respect as Vince notes those two have bad blood. Kamala beats down Gillespie as the announcers talk about his Coffin Match against Undertaker at the Survivor Series. Kamala stays in control then uses a splash for the win as Vince says there will be a special edition of the Funeral Parlor on SNME with Undertaker as the guest (1:34).
Thoughts: We learn that the Funeral Parlor will come back on SNME and that Finkel and Whippleman do not like each other.
We go to the Undertaker’s workshop as he is preparing the special coffin for Kamala that will be revealed next week.
Final Thoughts: The main focus on this show was SNME, not the Survivor Series. And behind the scenes it was a tumultuous time and there was a reason the SNME was hyped more on this show. And in my SNME recap tomorrow I will go into greater detail about this. Plus, we saw more focus on new and returning talent as its clear a changing of the guard is underway as we head into the new year.
