WWF Wrestling Challenge – October 11th, 1992
By Brian Bayless on November 20, 2018
October 11, 1992
From the Keystone Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan
Gene Okerlund is walking around the arena. He sees The Bushwhackers at the merchandise booth then Okerlund reminds them they have a match.
Gorilla comes marching into the announcers area like a Bushwhacker as Heenan is pissed. He’s holding some merchandise. We then learn that this week in action are British Bulldog, Nasty Boys, Papa Shango, and the Big Bossman.
Crush vs. Scotty Zappa
Gorilla says the WWF is buzzing about Crush, who is overpowering Zappa with ease. Heenan asks if Zappa is Frank Zappa’s kid and Gorilla doesnt know who that is so Heenan tells him that Frank was a jockey. Crush boots Zappa in the face and after that uses a bearhug before the head vice gets the win (2:35).
Thoughts: They keep building up Crush with squash match wins and pushing the Hawaiian gimmick.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. We learn of the Survivor Series main event, which is Razor Ramon & Ric Flair vs. Ultimate Maniacs.
Chad Almont vs. Papa Shango
Gorilla talks about the new rules enforcement in the WWF and how President Jack Tunney has put Sgt. Slaughter as an enforcer, who apparently has the power to reverse any decision. Shango beats down Almont then puts him out of misery with a reverse shoulderbreaker (2:10).
Thoughts: More talk about Sgt. Slaughter in his new role.
The Bushwhackers vs. Dale Hutchinson & Butch Banks
Banks actually still wrestles today. He’s been known as “Hardcore Craig” for a majority of his career and is based out of the Midwest. The Bushwhackers beat on Banks to start. Hutchinson tags in and does not fare any better then The Bushwhackers hit a double gutbuster for a win (2:40).
Thoughts: The Bushwhackers get a win but at this point are more like brand ambassadors, like shilling merchandise to start the show, than anything else.
Big Bossman vs. Jim Peterson
Peterson is tall and has a good physique. The announcers talk up the new video wall as Heenan claims he gave the idea to the producers. Peterson wants a test-of-strength and gets Bossman down to his knees. Bossman gets up and uppercuts Peterson before hitting a big boot as the announcers talk about the Bossman/Nailz feud. Bossman then hits a corner splash and mocks Peterson for the test-of-strength earlier and puts Peterson away with a sidewalk slam as he uses one finger (2:12). After the match, Peterson is tossed outside.
Thoughts: More talk about the Bossman/Nailz feud, which seems like it will never end.
“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Victor Reeves
Martel is wearing a stylish jacket and hat. Gorilla brings up Martel being a former Tag Team Champion and how he turned on his partner but does not mention Tito Santana’s name. Martel stalls then toys with Reeves. Sgt. Slaugther is shown watching the match from the aisle as Heenan refers to him as a “paid snitch.” Gorilla once again puts over Slaughter having unlimited power in his role as Martel stays in control of the match then uses a Boston Crab for the win (3:00).
Thoughts: Another match designed to highlight Slaughter’s new role on screen with the company.
Bob Backlund video montage from “Superstars” is shown.
Red Tyler vs. British Bulldog
The announcers talk about Bulldog vs. Kamala, which will take place this week on Prime Time. Bulldog uses a few arm drags then a slam on Tyler before working the arm. Bulldog now uses a chinlock but Tyler escapes. Bulldog cuts of Tyler and runs him over before the running powerslam gets the win (3:06).
Thoughts: Main point of this was to hype up the Bulldog vs. Kamala match for Prime Time.
An ad for the Survivor Series airs.
Jason Phillips & Jim Powers vs. Nasty Boys w/ Jimmy Hart
The announcers talk about which team Hart manages are in fact the #1 contenders to the Tag Team Titles. Powers works over Sags then tags out but his partner gets beaten down. Hart is shown in an insert promo talking about which of his teams will be the #1 contenders then says he can flip a coin to pick and he wins either way. Powers gets knocked off of the apron as his partner continues to get his ass kicked. The Nasty Boys toy with Phillips and keep pulling him up at the two count and the ref has enough and DQ’s the Nasty Boys (4:15).
Thoughts: They now actually showed the new rule enforcement during the match although this was done in lame fashion. The story continues over which of Hart’s teams will end up being the #1 contenders.
Next week in action are the Beverly Brothers, Max Moon, Nailz, and the Natural Disasters. Plus, an interview with Ric Flair & Razor Ramon.
The show ends with The Bushwhackers at the concession stand dumping spilling popcorn out from their mouths and the popcorn boxes.
Final Thoughts: We actually saw the new enforcement of the rules and for some reason they decided an aging, lower card tag team would be the best way to show how much fun it is to attend a live WWF event but other than that the key stuff was the same we saw from Superstars.
